Assistant Professor - Teaching Specialist

Job Responsibility
The UConn School of Medicine is seeking candidates for a non-tenure track Assistant Professor faculty position who have expertise in teaching, learning pedagogy, and educational scholarship. The Teaching Specialist will support faculty development programming to maximize teaching ability for our faculty and educational outcomes for our trainees. Additionally, this faculty member will oversee and have creative direction of the medical school’s Scholarship and Discovery program.
Key responsibilities include working with faculty to improve effective teaching, as well as to implement and evaluate innovative teaching approaches for medical student education. The teaching specialist will work to improve both classroom and clinical teaching through faculty development and individual consultation. This position requires expertise in communication skills, the enhancement of the learning environment, and effective feedback among other skills. As director of the Medical Student Scholarship and Discovery program, the role requires experience with educational scholarship, research design and methods. The director will work both with students as they progress toward their capstone project and with faculty mentors. Current curriculum related to ethical research methodology will be reviewed and updated as needed.
Minimum Qualifications Required - Knowledge, Skill and Ability
- Doctorate degree in Education, Higher Education, Educational Psychology, or other closely related field.
- Experience teaching at the graduate level.
- Experience in conducting educational workshops, seminars, and small group sessions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated conceptual, analytical and organizational skills.
- Ability to develop and maintain collaborative and productive relationships with various constituency groups.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in medical education.
- Evidence of scholarly work in teaching and learning.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in academic support/teaching effectiveness for professional students.
- Experience in medical education with demonstrated success in teaching strategies and faculty development.
- Experience as academic counselor, coach or mentor.
- Leadership experience in higher education.
- Experience in mentoring learners in the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of creative longitudinal scholarly projects.
