Job Description

The Department of Chemical Engineering (ChE) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Department Head.

The department ( http://www.che.vt.edu ) is home to 17.5 full-time faculty members, including several early career awardees, holders of endowed and named professorships as well as approximately 62 graduate students and 315 undergraduate students. The department benefits from excellent facilities with most of the department located in recently constructed Goodwin Hall. We have an enthusiastic faculty including a number of recent new hires. Disciplinary areas of specialization include biomedical engineering, polymer science and engineering, colloids and interfaces, process design and systems engineering, catalysis and surface science, supercritical fluids, and membranes and advanced separations.

In addition, ChE is affiliated with three Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Programs at Virginia Tech - Computational Tissue Engineering, Macromolecular Science and Engineering, and Regenerative Medicine. Members of the faculty participate in the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences, the Macromolecules Innovation Institute, the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science, and the Faculty of Health Sciences. The undergraduate program is nationally known for its capstone design course. The current annual departmental research expenditures exceed $3.8 M.

The applicant must have a distinguished record of scholarly publications, funded research, effective teaching, and professional and university service. The ideal candidate should have a proven record of outstanding administrative ability and academic leadership experience and a demonstrated commitment to inclusion and diversity in an academic environment. The Department Head is expected to provide effective departmental representation across the University, as well as foster strong relationships with industry representatives, development/advancement, government sponsors, alumni, and the ChE Advisory Board.

Required Qualifications

PhD degree in chemical engineering or closely related field. Professional qualifications and experience consistent with the requirements for appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure.
