Job Summary

The mission of Student Affairs at CU Boulder is to develop and implement innovative programs and services that positively impact student success, retention and graduation rates, engagement, and campus climate. The Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) reports to, and partners with, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA) to develop the vision, direction, and actualization of a comprehensive co-curricular experience for all students that aligns with the strategic imperatives of the campus and strategic plans within the division.

This position, along with the other Associate Vice Chancellor positions, will serve as the official second in command to the VCSA with delegated authority for numerous critical functions when the VCSA is not available. This role will work with the Dean of Students, other Associate and Assistant Vice Chancellors, Executive Directors and Directors across the Division to ensure the leadership, development and assessment of a comprehensive and holistic student support services for a diverse student body.

The AVC serves on the VCSA’s Cabinet, a small group of senior leaders within the division, along with serving on campus-wide committees that advance the strategic imperatives of the University. The AVC provides forward-thinking and strategic leadership for a holistic, multidisciplinary approach, including administrative oversight, support, and leadership for many auxiliary units that support both student and staff success. The portfolio includes Residence Life, New Student and Family Programs, Housing Facilities, Housing Administration and Operations, including Off-Campus Housing and Neighborhood Relations, Buff OneCard operations, Integrated Security, and Occupancy Management, but is subject to change based on the division's strategic needs.

The position is responsible for occupancy-related revenue collection of $130 million, an operating budget of $60 million and oversight of 276 professional staff members and 400 student staff members. This position will also work to grow revenue within the portfolio.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Leadership and Campus Representation
  • Chief housing officer for the campus requiring an ability to make data informed decisions and represent the needs of housing across campus.
  • Advise VCSA on matters pertaining to the Division of Student Affairs staff, operations, and students.
  • Serve on high-profile leadership committees, on-campus and within the community, promoting policies, programs; and advocates for changes that affect student life.
  • Contribute personal efforts and encourage others to chip in to achieve campus and division-wide strategies and initiatives.
  • Build a culture and climate conducive to high-impact teamwork.
  • Contribute to and cultivate a collaborative professional work environment between campus student leaders, divisional directors, academic units and faculty.
  • Develop systems for growing and developing managers and individual contributors assigned to the division.
  • Establish effective relationships with both internal and external constituencies (including faculty, students, staff) and serve as an effective representative of the campus.
  • Effectively manage human, program, fiscal and facility resources.
  • Support and contribute to student development, student welfare and program assessment efforts of the division.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, State, Federal laws, codes, and regulations; and systems, campus, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Advance the dedication to social justice, diversity, inclusivity and equity in Student Affairs.
  • Support assessment efforts of the division by enacting standard methodologies that lead to the need to make decisions based on data.
  • Support advancement efforts for the Division of Student Affairs at large as well as for specific departments with the AVC portfolio.

Administration and Supervision
  • Supervise Director and Executive Director level staff.
  • Supervise Director level staff to ensure quality, responsiveness, and efficiency in programs and services by supporting, developing and directing staff to meet goals, build on past successes, and create innovative visions for their departments.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the portfolio that includes Residence Life, New Student and Family Programs, Housing Administration, Housing Facilities, and Buff OneCard operations but is subject to change based on the division's strategic needs.
  • Build a working environment that uses the strengths and accomplishments of direct reports, promotes alignment and collaboration, and empowers experienced professionals with diverse responsibilities.
  • Provide leadership development for Directors reporting to this position.

Budget and Fiscal Operations
  • Budget oversight for reporting units, ensures the responsible planning and expenditure of fiscal resources in a manner consistent with all University policies and applicable local, state and federal laws.
  • Look at ways to increase revenue and fiscal opportunities within the portfolio.
  • Routinely assess the necessity of various expenditures, including but not limited to programming activities, staff recognition, and professional development/training.
  • Meet deadlines for all requests for reports, data, publications, and budgets.
  • Provide timely/pertinent budgetary information to the Vice Chancellor and staff as vital throughout the year.

Assessment and Evaluation
  • Provide leadership to identify, collect, and analyze appropriate data in order to assess student support services and develop key strategies for direct reports to meet the needs of current and future students.
  • Facilitate divisional, campus-wide, and community partner goals and outcomes related to student success and retention.
  • Develop short and long-term strategic goals for reporting units, ensuring they are in concert with the Universities mission and strategic imperatives.

Professional Development and other duties as assigned
  • Keep abreast of current literature and standard methodologies within the field of Student Affairs, Residential experiences, facilities management, first-year student challenges, University auxiliary areas and related professional organizations.
  • Other Duties as assigned.


What We Can Offer

Salary range is $160,000 - $175,000.

What We Require

  • A Master’s degree from an accredited institution in student affairs, Business Administration, Higher Education Administration or related field or equivalent experience.
  • At least six years of successful experience in planning, developing and implementing complex strategic goals and program initiatives that require the effective management of resources including a large and diverse workforce, significant budget and financial operations, and experience collaborating with students and student leadership.

  • Ability to interact successfully with senior level decision-makers within a large and sophisticated organization.
  • A proven track record of how to effectively direct professional and student employees.
