About the College/Unit/Department

The College of Engineering: The College of Engineering, formed on July 1, 2012, is building a vibrant academic environment that fosters engineering education in a liberal arts environment and research that addresses critical societal needs. The College offers eight accredited undergraduate and seven graduate engineering degree programs spanning all engineering fields. The college has grown rapidly to more than 2,400 undergraduate and graduate students and over 80 faculty members.

Position Summary

The College of Engineering at the University of Georgia seeks an exceptional scholar, educator, and leader to be the Chair of the School of Environmental, Civil, Agricultural, and Mechanical Engineering. The School is an innovative academic unit that is designed to promote interdisciplinary research and education at the boundaries of engineering disciplines. It is one of three academic units in a rapidly growing engineering college at a flagship public university, a college that has added five new degree programs, increased its enrollment from 650 students to over 2,600 students, hired over 50 faculty and staff, and tripled its research awards and expenditures since its founding in 2012.

The Chair will be expected to lead in the execution of the college-level and university-level strategic plans by building on the already strong culture of collaboration and innovation in the School, by expanding its reputation, promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, and demonstrating an enduring commitment to high-quality research and educational programs. The School of Environmental, Civil, Agricultural, and Mechanical Engineering currently consists of 43 full-time faculty members and over 1,300 students enrolled in seven undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The School administers a majority of the ‘gateway courses’ that form the core of the College’s undergraduate curriculum as well as the School’s upper-level elective and graduate courses for seven associated degree programs. The combination of these four disciplines is intentional and the School Chair will work with the faculty to enhance interdisciplinary activities within the School and with the broader university community. Research activities within the School are interdisciplinary and represent the college theme of use-inspired fundamental research on the sustainability, resilience and security of energy, water, food, infrastructure and environmental systems. Recent interdisciplinary research and educational initiatives include the formation of the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems, the New Materials Institute, and the Engineering Education Transformations Institute.

The School Chair will report directly to the Dean of the college and will have responsibilities that are consistent with those of a department head or department chair of a more traditional academic unit. They will have budgetary authority for the School and have supervisory responsibilities for staff within the School. The School Chair will also have authority over matters concerning allocation of resources such as space, matching funds, etc. and will act as a mentor to School faculty. They will be responsible for coordinating the instructional assignments for the undergraduate and graduate programs that are administered by the School and will be responsible for ensuring continued accreditation of degree programs. The School Chair will work with the Dean on assuring the integrity of the annual evaluation process for all faculty and staff.

Additional Requirements

A PhD in an engineering discipline or related field is required. The successful applicant will be appointed as a tenure track or tenured upon appointment Professor. All applicants are expected to have a strong record of scholarship, teaching, and service commensurate with the rank of Professor and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Applicants currently at the rank of full professor rank or in an equivalent non-academic position are strongly preferred, but applicants at other ranks or with equivalent credentials will be considered if their accomplishments warrant tenure at the rank of Professor.

Preferred qualifications also include experience in administration of academic and/or non-academic organizations, experience in staff supervision, and experience in budgetary management.

The applicant should be able to work effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and administrators to achieve common goals and to maintain rapport with alumni, nonprofit, government, and industry representatives. In addition to these attributes, we will be closely examining the applicant’s credentials in promoting, growing, and sustaining interdisciplinary teaching and research activities.
