Assistant/Associate/Full Professor - Mechanobiology/Bioengineering

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The College of Engineering Department of Bioengineering together with the College of Science Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Northeastern University invites applications for tenured or tenure-track appointments at the assistant, associate or full professor level. We seek exceptional candidates in the area of Mechanobiology who can apply innovative methodologies and uncover novel design principles and strategies to create impactful solutions to emerging societal problems in the areas of sustainability and health.

We seek individuals with passionate interest in understanding the rules governing the interplay between mechanical forces and living systems at the molecular, cellular, tissue and/or whole organism scales. There is growing realization of the importance of mechanical forces in shaping and controlling development, growth and regenerative processes in biology and the clinical implications of these interactions are profound. The individuals sought will join a University-wide cohort of investigators focused on this area, including researchers in Bioengineering, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Biology and Chemical, Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Engineering.

The Department of Bioengineering (bioe.northeastern.edu) includes 25 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 36% of whom are women; five full-time teaching faculty; and 47 faculty with affiliated appointments. BIOE enrolls approximately 600 undergraduate students; 90 M.S. and PlusOne (BS/MS) students; and 80 Ph.D. students. The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology (https://cos.northeastern.edu/chemistry-chemical-biology/) includes 27 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 30% of whom are women; nine full-time teaching faculty; four research faculty; and eight faculty with affiliated appointments. CCB was recognized as the most gender diverse faculty among the top 50 US Chemistry Departments in 2019. CCB enrolls approximately 150 undergraduate majors; 27 M.S. and PlusOne (BS/MS) students; and 80 Ph.D. students.

Responsibilities:
Candidates are expected to show potential/vision for or have demonstrated establishing an excellent nationally and internationally recognized research program and strong record in extramurally funded research. Candidates will also need to demonstrate high quality in teaching and contribute to advancing BIOE and CCB education programs. In addition, candidates should be prepared to contribute to department, college, and university service.

Qualifications:
Successful candidates must have a PhD in Bioengineering or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution by the appointment start date. Senior-level candidates must have a demonstrated record of funded and collaborative research, recognition for accomplished teaching, and a track record in supporting or leading efforts for inclusion and diversity. Junior applicants should demonstrate the ability to develop an innovative, externally funded, and collaborative research program. As education is a cornerstone of our Department, candidates should describe their experience and ability to engage trainees both in and out of the classroom is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional Information:
Candidates should be committed to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to the BIOE and CCB departments and Northeastern University. At the core of the Northeastern engineering education experience is our top-ranked cooperative education program, which contributes significantly to the integrated learning model of our students in the BIOE and CCB Department.

Applicants should submit (1) a cover letter; (2) detailed Curriculum Vitae; (3) a statement of research interests and objectives; (4) a statement outlining teaching interests, educational approaches, and mentoring philosophy; (5) a statement outlining activities and support plans for diversity, inclusion, and social justice; and (6) the names and contact information of at least three professional references. Applications received by December 15, 2021 will receive full consideration. The target starting date is the 2021-2022 academic year, but the position will remain open until filled.
