Jonathan S. Lewin, MD, FACR, Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, Emory University, and the Search Advisory Committee, co-chaired by Vikas P. Sukhatme MD ScD, Dean of the School of Medicine and Chief Academic Officer of Emory Healthcare, and Dane Peterson MBA, President and Chief Operating Officer of Emory Healthcare, invite applications and nominations for an outstanding academic, visionary leader to serve as the next Executive Director of the Winship Cancer Institute.

The successful candidate should be a dynamic and respected clinician and/or scientist with special expertise in cancer, who will serve in this critical leadership role to build upon the strengths and longstanding reputation for world class cancer care and innovative population sciences, clinical, translational and basic research related to cancer and the search for effective treatments and cures. The Executive Director will be expected to work collaboratively with the University’s / Emory Healthcare’s senior leadership and community partners to advance cancer care in Atlanta, across the State of Georgia, nationally and internationally.

As the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)–Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Georgia and one of only 51 in the country, Winship Cancer Institute discovers and develops novel and highly effective approaches to cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, and care. Winship has more than 500 faculty members, who received $107M in cancer research funding in 2020 (up from $96M in 2019), with $35M from the NCI. The Executive Director will be expected to serve as Principal Investigator of the Institute’s NCI Cancer Center Support Grant and will be expected to continue the strong tradition of research excellence within the Institute, while expanding basic, population health, clinical, and translational research in collaboration with university departmental and healthcare leadership as well as community stakeholders. It is expected that the Director will be a nationally recognized research scientist or clinician scientist with a proven track record of NCI funded research and preferably experienced in the administration of an NCI-designated comprehensive Cancer center.
