Job Description:

Furman University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in the Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity with specialization in African Diasporas or Africa. Ph.D. in Anthropology or related field is required at the time of appointment. Position commences in August 2021.

Candidate should engage with critical questions in anthropology, including critical race theory, and demonstrate attention to the broader context of anthropology in contemporary society. Secondary field specialization is open. Candidate must be committed to developing high-impact, engaged learning experiences for undergraduates (see The Furman Advantage for more on this campus-wide priority). A successful candidate will be active in ethnographic field work and be eager to direct undergraduate students in fieldwork projects, community-based projects, and/or study away programs. Commitment to locally engaged anthropology, social justice, and sources of inequality is highly desired. We seek a candidate excited to contribute to the growth of Anthropology and the new proposed Africana Studies major at Furman.

Furman's teaching load is 3-2. In addition to courses in the candidate's areas of specialty, candidate will ideally be prepared to teach Anthropology of Race and Ethnicity, Cultural Anthropology, and anthropological theory and methods.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, and to assist the university in its continuing efforts to become a model of inclusive excellence.
