Boat Captain

 

Coastal Carolina University is accepting applications for a Boat Captain (Watercraft Captain II). Position is a full-time, staff appointment based at the University’s campus in Conway, SC, and at its maritime facilities in Georgetown, SC, but will require travel to other coastal areas in South Carolina. The position will be in the University’s School of the Coastal Environment.  Coastal Carolina University is expanding and building upon a historic emphasis on the marine sciences. Advancing the University’s nautical capabilities in support of teaching and research is an important focus of the marine science program and the nautical staff.

 

Duties include, but are not limited to: operating the 53 ft. RV Explorer and the University’s smaller vessels; performing preventative maintenance on all University vessels; operating vessels in accordance with USCG and SC Wildlife Department regulations; preparing, outfitting, and scheduling of vessels for education and research; supervising a deck hand; training and instructing students and faculty in safe vessel operations; overseeing mobilization/demobilization and safe deployment of scientific instrumentation; assisting faculty in planning and reviewing operational plans; and determining areas for improvement and identifying trends in basic marine science instrumentation; and performing other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree, current USCG license for the gross tonnage of the University’s vessels, demonstrated skills operating a research vessel including the planning and safe deployment of instrumentation for education and research, knowledge of USCG regulations regarding navigation and safety, and knowledge and ability to perform preventative maintenance on vessels are required. Equivalencies will be considered. A bachelor’s degree in natural science or engineering, 10 year’s operating experience as a master or captain, experience collecting oceanographic data, working with faculty and students, and training and supervision of students in boat usage, navigation, and safety are preferred.
