Primary Purpose of Position:
The ideal candidate for this faculty position would develop and teach courses in African-American Literature from the Colonial/Slavery period through the present, including survey courses, intermediate courses, and upper-level Jr/Sr seminars in specific authors, genres, or periods. They will re-invigorate our English Literature Concentration and develop a curricular focus on African-American Literature, which is an appropriate goal for an HBCU. Also, the timing is right for curricular revision of both our African-American Literature offerings and the Literature Concentration as a whole.


Minimum Education/Experience:
Ph.D in English or a related field with a specialization in African-American Literature, and graduate coursework and teaching experience in Creative Writing. The ideal candidate will also hold an MFA or MA in Creative Writing, and have a demonstrated record of scholarly and creative publications.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Primary Area of Specialization: The faculty member will generally teach two mid-/upper-level courses in African-American Literature and two courses in Creative Writing. In addition to teaching four courses per semester, the faculty member will serve as the faculty advisor for the “Ex Umbra” literary publication and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in their creative writing endeavors.
