The JHU School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment to evaluate and manage adult patients with mental health complaints in accordance with established policies. The location is in the dedicated Psychiatric Treatment Services Area, a unique specialty area of the JHH Adult Emergency Department.

The Psychiatric Treatment Services area is a dedicated 12 bed unit of the adult emergency department at JHH which serves to provide specialty care and crisis services for patients with emergency behavioral health complaints. The mission of the Psychiatric Treatment Services area is to provide the highest quality care in an emergency setting with the goal of keeping patients safe during a mental health crisis until they can be fully evaluated and provided acute psychiatric management and an appropriate disposition plan. The collaborative nature between the adult emergency department and the department of psychiatry allows the psychiatric provider to focus on psychiatric evaluation and management yet have the support of a clinical emergency medicine attending and resident who are the providers of record for the patient and responsible for medical evaluation and management.

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will add to a growing treatment team of dedicated staff in this area which already consists of a psychiatric attending, psychiatric nurse practitioner, psychiatry resident physicians, psychiatric nursing staff, clinical social workers, case management, peer recovery specialists, dedicated security officers, psychiatry administration support staff which complete insurance authorizations and the medical providers of the adult emergency department of Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive assessments of new patients triaged to the Psychiatric Emergency Services area of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, which includes psychiatric consultations, mental status examinations, risk assessments, and contact with collateral informants.
  • Coordinate communication between the treatment providers including nursing staff, psychiatry providers, clinical social work and emergency medicine physicians.
  • After assessment is completed, determine the appropriate disposition level for the patient.
  • Manage patients boarding for inpatient admission but still in the emergency department. Management includes serial mental status exam, providing input on daily psychiatric care needs and continue coordination of care including appropriate documentation.
  • Coordinate hand offs between providers at change of shift and prior to changes in level of care.
  • Develop a working knowledge of community-based outpatient services and programs that can be used for referral.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

  • Advanced clinical skills in specialty area or equivalent. Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of an interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem solving.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in order to provide information to patients, families and health care personnel.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.
  • General computer knowledge and capability to use an electronic medical record.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
