Professor and Director of Engineering Research

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

Northeastern University invites applications for a Professor and Director of Engineering Research, located at The Roux Institute at Northeastern University, in Portland, Maine. The Roux Institute is designed as an engine of innovation, talent, and economic growth in Portland, the state of Maine, and the region. Partnership is what sets our education and research model apart. With leading companies at the table from day one, we are creating an agile workforce prepared to thrive in a competitive landscape powered by artificial intelligence as a force for good, and an environment for innovation in the life sciences and other high-growth sectors.

Responsibilities:
The Director of Engineering Research at the Roux Institute at Northeastern University will provide the leadership for overseeing the growth of a research program that will be positioned at the interface of artificial intelligence, digital engineering, and the advanced life sciences and medicine. The program will be translational in nature, focusing on fields including robotics, materials, construction, advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, biomaterials, and biomedical devices.

Besides driving their own research program as a Northeastern University faculty member, the Director will coordinate a portfolio of highly matrixed collaborations in engineering, with contributors on the Institute campus in Portland ME and beyond. Contributors will include faculty and professional research staff at The Roux Institute, faculty across the Northeastern network, and industry researchers who may be co-located at the Institute or located at their own company. The portfolio will be connected to the collection of highly innovative university institutes, including the Institute for Experiential Artificial Intelligence, the Institute for Experiential Robotics, the Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things and the Institute for Chemical Imaging of Living Systems (www.northeastern.edu/institutes).

The Director will be expected to collaborate with faculty and administration at all the Northeastern network campuses (currently Boston, Burlington MA, Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto, San Francisco, Charlotte, London, and Silicon Valley), and will develop engineering research programs that may include researchers from the entire network; therefore, an ability to communicate across a wide range of research disciplines is essential.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Develop and implement a funding strategy that leverages a combination of federal and industrial sources and marshals the faculty and research staff at the Roux Institute to respond to large scale research funding opportunities.
  • Represent the Roux Institute engineering research portfolio to external audiences, including funders, state, local and Federal government, corporate or academic partners, and potential new partners.
  • Internally interface with the engineering research community across the Northeastern network, in order to identify internal collaborators whose work is aligned with or complements that at the Roux Institute.
  • Collaborate with the Roux Institute Strategic Alliance and Partnerships teams in identifying research partners across the US who complement the Roux portfolio and wish to engage in research in the Portland ecosystem.
  • Coordinate a cadre of Engineering research faculty and professional research staff at the Institute, and at least one research administrator.
  • Coordinate with the College of Engineering to maximize capacity and growth of engineering research at Northeastern
  • Contributions to the teaching mission at the Roux Institute; tenured faculty will have explicit expectations for teaching in support of the Institute educational mission; non-tenure track will have an option to teach but, in the spirit of infusing research into our curriculum, will also be expected to collaborate with the Roux Institute academic leadership in enhancing our academic program offerings
  • Tenured faculty have an explicit expectation for service to the Institute, University, and profession.

Central to the Roux Institute are fifteen Partner Organizations within the Maine ecosystem and beyond; these organizations span industry, academia, and nonprofits. Thus, the Director must be a professional who can work to proactively develop deep research relationships with regional industry. The Director will display an entrepreneurial spirit to grow a research environment that is highly unique in higher education.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a faculty member in the College of Engineering and could be appointed in one or more additional Northeastern Colleges and departments as appropriate, with affiliate faculty appointment at the Roux Institute, which is where they will be primarily located. They will report to the Senior Vice Provost for Portland in their role of Director, and to their disciplinary department chair in their role as a faculty member.

Qualifications:
  • PhD or other terminal degree in engineering or a related field, with experience level appropriate for appointment at the rank of Professor, Professor of the Practice, or Research Professor.
  • Demonstrated track record of scholarly achievement in engineering, with a commensurate research funding history.
  • National prominence as a research leader in own discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:
Entrepreneurial, energetic, and collaborative leadership skills. Excellent communication skills across diverse audiences and settings. A strategic mindset. Ability to work in a fast-paced and innovative setting. He/she must have experience working independently and as a member of a team. Some travel may be required to regional campus(es), particularly Boston.

Salary Grade:
FAC

Additional Information:
Please submit a cover letter of interest highlighting research and teaching accomplishments and relevant professional experience, a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of at least three references.

Compensation is commensurate with qualifications.
