Postdoctoral Research Fellow

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and a world leader in experiential learning. The same commitment to connecting with the world drives our use-inspired research enterprise. The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Our campuses in Charlotte, N.C., San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto are regional platforms for undergraduate and graduate learning and collaborative research. Northeastern pursues advanced research in security and materials at the Innovation Campus in Burlington, Massachusetts, and in coastal sustainability at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts.

About the Opportunity:
The Kane Lab in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to support a US Dept. of Energy project on occupant-centric control of grid-interactive efficient buildings. This project looks to accelerate the design of smarter occupant-centric building control algorithms that learn user behavior, are easy to use, and can correctly predict HVAC performance and power draw. The project takes a novel approach to cost-effectively produce and share a large dataset on characterizing grid-interactive efficient buildings and occupant behavior. Laboratory thermal-chamber experiments of heat-pumps will be synchronized with full building-simulators to test the devices' performance in different homes and weather conditions. Data collected from volunteers in homes under simulated grid conditions will help build the occupant thermal comfort behavior models used in the building simulations and model-based controls.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will assist the co-PIs in leading this highly interdisciplinary project. As part of this project, the Fellow's creativity and professionalism will generate new knowledge through focused as well interdisciplinary research and shape the academic, commercial, and broader impacts of the core project concepts. The Fellow will be mentored by leading researchers in academia, national labs, and innovative companies providing a strong foundation for their career.

Responsibilities:
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow is expected to play a leading role in the project, especially relating to interdisciplinary challenges as well as maintaining and growing a professional rapport with DOE program officers, corporate and national lab partners, and field test participants. The Fellow will help the team develop innovative interdisciplinary methods for controls at the mind, machine, and motor nexus, and help define innovative experimental methods to meet technical requirements and deadlines. Additional responsibilities include mentoring the project's diverse group of graduate research assistants; help author reports, papers, and journal articles; and disseminate research results through publications, open source software, and open data.

Qualifications:
  • A recent PhD degree in civil, architectural, mechanical engineering or a similar discipline, or a PhD in a social science with at least a master's degree in one of the preceding engineering fields;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience on projects that required human-subjects research ethics approval.
  • Professionalism in coding and managing software development
  • Demonstrated leadership of diverse and/or interdisciplinary groups
  • Demonstrated ability to translate research to impact in both academic and professional contexts.

Salary Grade:
10

Additional Information:
  • Northeastern University is committed to recruiting and supporting a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcomes applications from members of historically excluded groups.
  • This is a one-year appointment, with an opportunity to renew on an annual basis for two additional years.
