Arizona State University seeks a skilled and creative scholar and administrator to serve as the Director of the School of Sustainability, leading the nation’s first-established School of Sustainability. The new Director will lead the School in carrying out its stated mission: “to foster innovative research, impactful education, and engaged communities to achieve environmental integrity, social equity, and wellbeing” supporting the School’s vision of “empowering transformation for a thriving, sustainable world.” The new Director will begin at an opportune time as the School of Sustainability becomes one of three schools in the new College of Global Futures and one of the anchor schools in the newly launched Global Futures Laboratory at Arizona State University. The Director will work with the Dean of the College of Global Futures and the Vice President and Vice Provost of Global Futures to advance bold initiatives in learning, discovery, solutions, networks, and engagement with the ambitious goal of ensuring a habitable planet where all people can thrive.
In 2006, Arizona State University (ASU) created the first U.S. academic unit to offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in sustainability. Since its beginnings, ASU’s School of Sustainability (SOS) has inspired and supported researchers, students, faculty, alumni, and communities to discover and implement sustainability-based solutions. Today, SOS is a leader in sustainability education and research, continuing to set the agenda globally for what constitutes a world-class school of sustainability.
The Director of the School of Sustainability will take the helm of the School at a moment ripe for action and impact. The Director will help shape the future of a historic, innovative entity, guiding its next generation of impact and success through aiding crucial learning and research required for a thriving world. To achieve these ambitious goals, the SOS Director will address the following opportunities and challenges:
- Lead the School for the next generation of growth
- Develop and foster innovative research and discovery efforts
- Expand student engagement: in person, online, as well as non-traditional degrees, certificates and programs
- Engage external partners and communities globally to co-create and scale transformative change
- Enhance internal partnerships and infrastructures to thrive as an intentional community
