The Assistant Director provides direction and leadership for the department's graduate and undergraduate student staffing processes. The Assistant Director supervises 3-5 full-time Residence Coordinators, 1 full-time Desk Operations Coordinator, and is indirectly responsible for 3-5 Graduate Residence Coordinators and 35-45 Resident Assistants.   

Job Responsibilities:

  • 40% Supervision: Oversee the day to day operations of 3-5 residential communities in areas related to student and community development, student behavior, academic initiatives, personnel and administrative policies and procedures, and physical environment concerns; Directly supervises 3-5 full-time Residence Coordinators and a full-time Desk Operations Coordinator.

  • 20% Student Staffing: Develop, implement, and evaluate recruitment and selection processes for graduate and undergraduate staff including Graduate Assistants, Graduate Residence Coordinators, Resident Assistants, Diversity Assistants, Office Assistants, and Desk Assistants; Execute selection of Resident Assistants and Diversity Assistants, and assist and support in-community staff hiring of Office Assistants, and the DOC's management of Desk Assistant hiring throughout the year.

  • 20% Performance Management: Oversee the accountability process for undergraduate and graduate staff members, including graduate assistants; Plan, implement and assess departmental-wide evaluation processes and forms for undergraduate and graduate staff members; Incorporate staff evaluations to provide ongoing feedback, tying performance management into the rehire process.

  • 10% Administrative: Assist in the establishment and implementation of efficient administrative policies, programs and procedures within the University and Departmental guidelines; Develop strategic goals and objectives for areas of responsibility in conjunction with strategic direction of the Department and the University and oversee unit Strategic Planning initiatives.

  • 10% Other Duties: Serve as a member of the Department of Residential Life and Education Leadership team; Serve in on-call rotation at the Leadership Team level; Advise, chair or participate as a member of various inter- and intra-department committees on behalf of the department; Coordinate departmental projects as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in College Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, or related field.

  • 4+ years of full-time experience (Graduate Assistantships count as a 1/2 year)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing staff selection processes

  • Experience with recruitment efforts for staffing positions, including placement exchanges

  • Experience with evaluation and/or staff accountability processes

Special/Physical Qualifications

As with all LSU employees, Assist Directors have an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services.  Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral , or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee, outside of those rights contained within FERPA, should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality. In accordance with University PS 18, this position is considered essential and may be required to report or stay on camps in the event of emergency or closure.  Due to the nature of the position, this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing per PS-67
