The Survey Evaluation Research Laboratory ( SERL ) under the Center for Public Policy in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs examines public issues and social problems through applied research and evaluation techniques to broaden and improve public discourse and decision-making.
SERL serves the research and evaluation needs of federal, state, and local government, universities, and organizations in the non-profit and private sectors by providing a diverse range of research activities including polls, specialized survey research projects, evaluation studies, and community-based capacity-development programs.
SERL also provides data management services, including set up and design of long-term data collection systems, technical expertise in multi-site data collection and training for data collection entities.
This position assists with a variety of project functions and tasks to help deliver successful project outcomes.
• Responsibilities will focus on data management, data preparation, descriptive data analyses, and report writing. Duties also include assisting with the creation of materials to be used on research projects.
• This job supports the successful production of complex web-based and mail survey projects (mail-merging materials, working with mail crews who assemble mailings, monitoring returns on mail and web surveys, etc.). This work happens in coordination with the overall goals and objectives of SERL .
• This position will also: Assist with focus groups and in-person interviews, document project activities, perform quality control and project coordination functions to ensure successful project outcomes, monitor production to ensure deadlines are met, search literature on topical or methodological issues, document final survey and/or evaluation instruments, clean and prepare data and documentation for transfer to clients, prepare and participate in project briefings and training sessions, provide support when SERL responds to requests for proposals, support IRB applications/modifications when necessary, and complete other duties as assigned.
• This position may also support work on multiple, diverse, research projects
Required Qualifications
Individuals need to have a sound understanding of the foundations of research and evaluation. They must have strong portfolio of skills – especially for data analysis and report writing. Attention to detail and good time management are essential. The ability to work independently – or as part of a team – is important as well.
A writing sample from all applicants is required.
Also due to the COVID 19 crisis ability to telework is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with SPSS or other similar data analysis software such as SAS or Stata. Experience with Qualtrics and REDCap a plus.
