Teaching Assistant Professor, Non-tenure Track Faculty Full Time, Department of Geology and Geologic
$37,300 - $131,500. Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
The Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for a non-tenure track teaching assistant professor. We welcome applications from candidates who have a commitment to and passion for teaching undergraduates, for developing and delivering field-based courses, for assuming leadership of our summer field camp (as Field Camp Director), and for helping lead our undergraduate recruiting and outreach efforts. The successful candidate is encouraged to be a leader in educating our faculty about recent pedagogical advancement. Early-career candidates who developed a passion for teaching during their PhD training are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will teach primarily at the undergraduate level. The primary teaching load of this position will depend on the candidate’s areas of expertise and will include a combination of classes in introductory geology and geological engineering, geological field methods, advanced physical geology, thermodynamics and geochemistry, mineralogy and petrology, and an elective class. This position will also be primarily responsible for the management of our Summer Field camp, a 6-week experience in May and June for rising senior undergraduates and will teach at least one of the 6 weeks. The candidate will also make critical contributions to our undergraduate recruiting and outreach events.
- PhD in geology, geological engineering, or related field.
- Demonstrated potential for and/or documented record of teaching excellence at the university undergraduate level. Teaching experience may be as an instructor or as a teaching assistant (TA).
- Demonstrated interest in and commitment to teaching a subset of the designated areas of expertise, which include introductory geology and geological engineering, geological field methods, advanced physical geology, thermodynamics and geochemistry, mineralogy and petrology, and an elective class.
- Demonstrated interest in leading geologic field camp and recruiting of and outreach to potential undergraduate students and their families.
- Documented experience in teaching a subset of the designated areas of expertise, which include introductory geology and geological engineering, geological field methods, advanced physical geology, thermodynamics and geochemistry, mineralogy and petrology, and an elective class.
- Documented experience with leading geologic field camp and design and delivery of geologic field classes, and knowledge of the geology of the western United States.
- Documented experience designing and delivering outreach and recruiting events, particularly to underrepresented populations of grades 8-12 and students at two-year colleges.
This is an auspicious time to join the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering. Currently, the Department has 17 tenured/tenure-track faculty, one teaching faculty, and 8 research faculty, 44% of whom are women and 11% of whom are minorities. We also have 3 staff who support the mission of our department. This cadre of professionals supports approximately 120 undergraduate and 140 graduate students. The Department offers an ABET-accredited B.S. in Geological Engineering, and several M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered in the Department and through interdisciplinary programs at Mines, including Geology, Geological Engineering, Hydrologic Sciences and Engineering, Geochemistry, and Underground Construction and Tunnel Engineering, as well as several non-thesis/Professional M.S. degrees. We have vigorous research programs in a range of disciplines in geology, geological engineering and related fields.
