Assistant Professor, Director of Bands/Instrumental Music Education

Primary Responsibilities:

 

Provide visionary and artistic leadership for the entire band program with primary responsibilities for the Southeast Marching Band (supported by an Assistant Director of Bands and a Director of Percussion), the Wind Symphony, and the Concert Band. Other duties will include providing leadership in Bachelor of Music Education instrumental degree program. Teach undergraduate courses in basic conducting, advanced instrumental conducting and literature, marching band techniques (including drill software), instrumental pedagogy for the PK-12 levels, as well as other courses in Music Education as needed.  This position may also require the observation and supervision of field experience courses.  Additional teaching assignments may include a general music course (such as Technology, Instrumental Techniques/Methods Courses, Music Appreciation, Jazz Appreciation, Aural Skills, Music Theory, applied instrument, or other appropriate courses as assigned), based on the candidate’s strengths and interests.  This is a 10-month position; and may include an additional one-month, separate contract for summer to include the expectation for experiential student learning (formation of a band camp or other experiential learning opportunity).  Recruiting, advising, and mentoring students are important components of this position as is serving as a liaison and resource to public school music teachers in the region.  Service opportunities will include departmental, college and university committees as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in Instrumental Conducting. Music Education, or other relevant terminal degree area in Music.  (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government certified university.)
  • Demonstrated evidence of visionary leadership in developing an innovative and comprehensive band program of excellence
  • Demonstrated experience with budget management
  • A minimum of three years of Public School teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to teach courses such as Band Literature, Instrumental Ensemble Pedagogy, Conducting, Advanced Instrumental Conducting, Marching Band Techniques, and Literature, and Instrumental Music Education courses 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum in the instrumental and music education areas
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating appropriate technologies (audio, audio-visual, web-based), in rehearsals and courses
  • Demonstrated peer-reviewed research or creative activity
  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to participation in professional organizations and mentoring students through such organizations
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multi-cultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community

Departmental Information:  The department of Music includes 16 full time and 6 part time faculty members that serve approximately 150 undergraduate majors, and is located on the River Campus, the only dedicated campus for the Arts in Missouri. The department offers the Bachelor of Music in Performance degree (B. M.), with options in voice, winds, strings, keyboard, guitar, and percussion; the Bachelor of Music Education degree (B.M.E.), in either vocal or instrumental certification; and the Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.), with a major in music. The musical arts flourish at Southeast. The department supports 12 ensembles including orchestra, band, and choral groups.  Several small student ensembles and faculty chamber groups further compliment this creative climate.  Student soloists compete and perform regularly across the region, and many faculty members maintain active performing schedules.
