We are seeking a Manager, Data Engineering to join a talented team responsible for our data product infrastructure, focusing on media, and higher education, and nonprofit organizations. In this role, you will manage a team of data and software engineers to build and extend The Chronicle’s real-time API and services integration platform. You will help coach, build, and nurture a high-performing team of media application integration and data engineers to execute on a major company initiative. You will report to and partner with the Director of Product Engineering to lead detailed engineering design, task breakdown, and work assignments for the data team.

As the manager, you will collaborate and connect with business stakeholders, product owners, and others to facilitate solution design and develop technical requirements. You will also serve as a mentor and subject matter expert in enterprise integration best practices and work with project leads to manage the work around SCRUM cadence.  

What you’ll do:
  • Plan and implement middleware platforms and solutions for integration across enterprise software systems, cloud applications and fulfillment systems
  • Develop scalable software and APIs with modern open-source technology stacks and tools like Java, Apache Camel, Elasticsearch, ActiveMQ, Talend and Mulesoft
  • Contribute to the “idea backlog” and prototype ideas around new technologies
  • Lead solution design and discovery discussions and document engineering tasks for implementation
  • Analyze business requirements and design functional specifications for implementation, testing, and deployment
  • Work closely with functional leads, project managers, and stakeholders to support and understand integration requirements
  • Manage engineers by leading the charge to set the bar high for how we solve and implement technology solutions to business challenges
  • Ensure team members are cross trained as needed
  • Provide training and career path development to evolve skills, competencies, and experience
  • Lead the evolution of engineering design and create processes and principles. Guide team to know their engineering domain, including best approaches and techniques used by prominent companies and prominent engineers
  • Inspire the team to do their best work while engendering an enjoyable and sustainable work environment
  • Recommend, implement, and enforce software engineering strategies, policies, standards, procedures, and best practices
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field and 3- 5+ years of experience in a data-integration role
  • 1-3 years of experience as a data and/or software engineering team lead or manager
  • Ability to present technical ideas, high-level concepts, and solutions to internal and external team members with varying degrees of technical knowledge
  • Demonstrated understanding of backend system development with the desire to grow and sharpen your skills in enterprise technologies, cloud integration, and microservices
  • Experience in enterprise integrations patterns and methods
  • Experience in enterprise-level data integrations using systems such as Talend or Mulesoft
  • Expert-level experience in software engineering and architecture. Ability to learn new technologies quickly
  • Strong understanding of DevOps & CICD and experience with software development in microservice environments
  • Proficient in technologies and solutions such as Java, AWS, Terraform, Service Mesh, and Kubernetes
  • Experience designing, documenting, and implementing RESTful APIs
  • Proficient using Git, Unix/Linux and CLI
  • High standards of data quality through the introduction and enforcement of information handling processes and organization of the data integration processes
  • Experience with business and technical requirements analysis, business process modeling/mapping and methodology development, and data mapping
