The Chronicle of Higher Education is seeking an editor to join the staff of its opinion section, which includes The Chronicle Review. The editor’s chief responsibility will be to commission and edit sharp, timely, compelling columns, articles, and essays that speak to the themes and concerns of the academy. If you can spitball about the history of the public intellectual and the plight of adjuncts, this might be the job for you.

You’ll need to be self-motivated and attuned to how journalism is distributed and consumed online. You should be comfortable at the intersection of the academy, journalism, and the broader intellectual world. The job requires you to develop your own ideas and frame them for a sophisticated but non-specialist audience, and you should have a track record of editing for style and argument. You’ll cultivate relationships with writers, primarily scholars. The smart and engaging articles you develop will drive conversation in the academy. A background in academe is welcome.

The Chronicle is independently owned and based in Washington, D.C. Our pay is commensurate with experience, and our benefits are among the best in the business.

If this sounds like the place you want to make your mark, send a cover letter, résumé or CV, three-five clips (that you wrote or edited), and five brief pitches for story ideas to editorialsearch@chronicle.com.
