SEARCH FOR THE DEAN

Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology

Virginia Union University

Richmond, Virginia

Virginia Union University (VUU), a Baptist affiliated private liberal arts institution located in the heart of Virginia’s capital city, seeks an innovative and accomplished leader to serve as the Dean of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology (STVU). The deanship offers a singular opportunity for a dynamic theological and pastoral leader to build on the Proctor School of Theology’s eminent record as a center of excellence in graduate theological education with a broad and impressive national and international reach. Known for its deep commitment to developing prophetic scholar-practitioner pastoral leaders for the Black Church, STVU has prepared thousands of ministers and religious leaders who have distinguished themselves through exemplary service to the church and the world.

The Dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology and, reporting directly to the University Provost and Associate Provost, has the ultimate responsibility for the leadership and direction of the School. The Dean is also responsible for the finances and day-to-day operations for the School and will oversee its annual operating budget of approximately $2.1 million. The next Dean will lead the School at a key moment in its history, charting a course for its continued growth, transformation, and impact.

The successful candidate must be first and foremost a highly respected and well-published scholar and practitioner with an outstanding record of leadership and service in the Black Church, the public square, and in the classroom. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have experience providing strong administrative management and visionary leadership in complex institutional contexts; a commitment to the mission of VUU and STVU, the values of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Historically Black Theological Schools (HBTS), and the ecumenical Black Church tradition; as well as an understanding of and appreciation for STVU’s unique position within the local, regional, and national landscape. The ideal candidate will have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution in a field of study consistent with the degree programs and courses of instruction offered by the faculty of STVU.
