The Rehabilitation Research and Training Center ( RRTC ), School of Education, is seeking to hire a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. This position’s responsibilities will be completed in and around the Newport News metro area. The Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor will complete the Discovery/Assessment process with customers with disabilities and implement situational assessments for individuals referred to and accepted into the Project SEARCH and/or RRTC Business Connections, engage in business development designed to establish business partnerships for the promotion of employment of people with disabilities in integrated community settings, provide direct instruction of job duties and related skills to support the employee with a significant disability to meet employer standards, provide ongoing identification of community supports needs and support in securing services to individuals with disabilities on the current caseload, and conduct needs assessments and technical assistance to other professionals locally, statewide, and nationally as needed.
Required Qualifications
Experience working with individuals with disabilities to learn new skills.
Direct interaction supporting individuals with disabilities.
Above average verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Education, Psychology, or Business.
Familiarity with the Newport News, Virginia area businesses and community resources.
Experience with implementing Positive Behavior Supports.
Experience working with individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities, preferably in areas of model internship programs and community integrated competitive employment.
