University College (UC) enhances student engagement and success through curricular innovation, interdisciplinary studies and support for excellence in learning. It is the home of Focused Inquiry, the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, the Common Book Initiative, and other programs focused on increasing student engagement and student success. University College offers first-year students an innovative, cohort-based first-year seminar experience, designed around critical thinking, curiosity and shared learning opportunities. By providing students with a common experience, these courses help make the first year of college more engaging and meaningful, and provide a strong foundation for integrative learning at VCU and beyond.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

This full-time faculty position will maintain a 4/4 academic teaching load in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program in University College (UC). As an IDS Assistant Teaching Professor, this position will teach and mentor students in the IDS degree program, as well as contribute to curricular development, innovative pedagogy, and assessment for the program. IDS faculty work in support of the IDS administrative team, as we ensure our program goals are met and remain in alignment with the goals of University College.

Position Responsibilities

- 4/4 instructional load: teach four courses in the IDS curriculum each semester (i.e., UNIV 301, 303, 391, 499, including online sections of core and capstone courses, as needed).

- Serve as the primary faculty supervisor and mentor for all IDS students seeking enrollment in IDS independent study ( UNIV 492) and internship courses ( UNIV 493).

- Contribute to IDS curricular development, pedagogical innovation, and assessment practices; support establishment of IDS pathways.

- Support the IDS administrative team to foster the program’s continued development. Participate in regular IDS program staff meetings.

- Service on program, University College, and university-wide committees, as necessary.

- Such service will be noted in faculty evaluations.

Required Qualifications

- Terminal degree in an appropriate academic discipline.
- Evidence of excellence in college-level teaching.
- Evidence of strong teaching skills in written and oral communication, critical thinking, information fluency, collaborative learning, and ethical reasoning, as well as demonstrated interest or proficiency in the use of digital, networked technologies for teaching and learning.
- Strong communication skills, demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with others, and an interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
- Demonstrated experience working in a learning-centered environment focused on integrative learning.
- Must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU .

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in interdisciplinary research and teaching.
- Demonstrated experience working with and teaching non-traditional and URM students.
- Working knowledge of Word Press for ePortfolio initiatives.
- Familiarity with designing course- and program-level assessment strategies.
