Position Details: The Harper College Police Department is currently looking for an Experienced Police Officer to add to their team.

Under the administrative supervision of the Deputy Chief of Police and the functional supervision of the Police Supervisor the Officer provides service and protection to the people and property of Harper College through the enforcement of federal and state laws and Harper College rules and regulations, provides community service to the campus community through patrols, order maintenance, and public assistance.

Patrol campus by motor vehicle, bicycle, or on foot to prevent, discover, and deter the commission of a crime; to enforce criminal and traffic laws, college rules and regulations; and to check the security of buildings, functioning of outdoor lighting and traffic signals, and road conditions. Monitors and directs vehicular and pedestrian traffic as required. Responds to calls for a variety of services including investigation of alarms, animal control, assistance to motorists, building maintenance problems, domestic problems, thefts, and other acts against persons or property. Observes, investigates and reports unusual conditions bearing on the safety and/or security of the College community.

Educational Requirements: Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice or related field OR combination of college education and experience or equivalent experience. (Equivalent experience is defined as one year of college equivalence for every two years of “on point” job-related experience)

Experience Requirements:

  • Current certification as a full-time Law Enforcement Officer by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board or the ability to obtain an out of state waiver from the ILETSB.
  • Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice or related field OR combination of college education and experience or equivalent experience.
  • No Felony or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.
  • Ability to patrol all facilities on foot.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid FOID card or ability to obtain.
  • Ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Uphold the College and police Departments Mission and Values.
  • Successful completion of an oral interview.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation.
  • Successful completion of a psychological evaluation.
  • Successful completion of a medical examination.


  • Desired Qualification: Specialty assignments in municipal or college police departments to include experience in accreditation and prior police supervision.
