Faculty Medical Physicist

Assistant/Associate Professor (03-317-177,178 & 179) : The Division of Medical Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is recruiting three (3) faculty physicists at the Assistant/Associate Professor level depending on skills and experience. The location will vary: one (1) position at UMMC and two (2) at the University of Maryland Shore Regional Hospital.

The successful candidate will join our existing team of dedicated Medical Physics faculty at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) or University of Maryland Shore Regional Hospital, and will be responsible for clinical duties such as quality assurance, machine maintenance and calibration, patient treatment planning and treatment support, as well as technology and workflow implementation. In addition, the position will be expected to support our special procedures which include (i) a robust stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) program comprising Linac-based SRS treatment planning, gammaKnife, and GammaPod; (ii) high dose-rate brachytherapy, and (iii) thermal therapy. Active participation is also expected in teaching of medical and physics residents, medical students, medical dosimetrists, and radiation therapists. Candidates are also expected to actively engage in clinical innovation and translation, and collaborate with our physics and translational research faculty in various areas such as advanced motion management, functional avoidance in thoracic radiotherapy, AI and Radiomics applications, photon and proton small animal IGRT on the SARRP platform, MRI-guided radiotherapy, and FLASH radiation therapy. The UMMC position will support the multi modality/ special procedures and participation in proton therapy/ FLASH/ etc. The Shore team will have photon therapy and HDR.

Qualifications :

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in medical physics, engineering, or related physical science and ABR board certification/eligibility in radiation oncology physics. Expected rank for this position will be Assistant Professor or higher; however, final rank and tenure status will be commensurate with selected candidate’s experience.

Facility and Equipment
The department has 5 well-integrated community programs. Our current clinical program has 12 linear accelerators, 6 multi-slice large bore CT simulators, an MRI, 3 HDR units, a Gamma Knife, and active programs in protons, Hyperthermia, Brachytherapy, SRS/SBRT, Radioembolization, Gamma Pod and Xofigo. There are several campus-wide shared resources including small-animal imaging CT, PET and MR scanners.

Medical Physics led by Dr. Amit Sawant, has 30 medical physics faculty, 26 dosimetrists, 3 physics residents, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and 6 information systems and technology staff. All practice sites are connected via a state-of-the-art telemedicine network facilitating interactions between faculty and staff. Research programs include the development of new treatment planning and delivery techniques, tumor motion management, inter-fraction image guidance strategies, two SARRPs and research vaults dedicated to photon and proton related research. The division of medical physics has research space co-located with DTRS. Research facilities include office and lab space of >20,000 sq ft, with a 1,000 sf machine shop.
