Location: Southeast Wisconsin
Categories: Agricultural, Animal, Biological and Life Sciences, Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, Plant Sciences, Research, Scientific

Position Summary:

There are two grassland bird field assistant positions available on a graduate study examining the effects of microclimate variation on grassland bird nesting success in southern Wisconsin. The study is housed in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology and associated with the Wisconsin Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit. One position will be available starting in early May and last approximately 3 months while a second position will begin in June and last approximately 2 months.

These positions will primarily focus on nest searching and monitoring of grassland songbird nests. However, they will also assist with vegetation surveys, deployment, and collection of iButton temperature sensors, collection of aerial imagery by UAS (applicants will not pilot the drone however), collection of sub-meter accuracy GPS coordinates, and data entry and proofing as needed. Grassland nest searching is difficult even for experienced nest-searchers and requires a great deal of patience and concentration, sometimes under challenging conditions. The ideal applicant will be patient and diligent by nature and have a strong interest in the ecology and behavior of non-game wildlife. Applicants should also be comfortable in a wide range of outdoor conditions and undeterred by biting insects, wet vegetation, and high temperatures. It also essential that applicants are prepared to work 6-day weeks with days off sometime determined by weather conditions.

These positions provide an opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of data collection techniques and experience the beauty and diversity of grassland ecosystems in Wisconsin.

The UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences is committed to maintaining and growing a culture that embraces diversity, inclusion, and equity, believing that these values are foundational elements of our excellence and fundamental components of a positive and enriching learning and working environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
