Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Research Data Librarian is a part of Randall Library’s newly developed Scholarly Research Services ( SRS ) team designed to support UNCW’s recently elevated status as a doctoral university and serves as Randall Library’s functional expert on the range of data services increasingly supported in research libraries, including data curation and management, analysis and presentation, sharing and stewardship.

This position develops, delivers, and assesses library services that support faculty, researchers, and students in the discovery, use, preservation, and visualization of data. This position, in collaboration with liaison and SRS librarians, provides outreach, consultation, and instruction on the use of secondary data, data management plans, data sharing and preservation options, and the interpretation of data in various contexts to faculty, researchers, and students. The librarian collaborates with colleagues in the library to support individual researchers and scholars as well as partnering with other campus units involved in research data support. The Research Data Librarian actively contributes to and promotes data curation services in the institutional repository as well as in disciplinary data repositories.

This is an 11-month, renewable, non-tenure track faculty position reporting to the Senior Associate Director for Library Information Technology and Scholarly Research.

Research Services to Users

• Analyze and assess campus data management needs, current initiatives, and future directions
  
• Actively engage with faculty, researchers, and students across campus to understand their needs, build collaborations, and promote library services.
  
• Identify software and tools and develop services supporting the discovery and management of research data.

Data preservation and repositories

• Provide active curation (e.g., in accordance with FAIR data principles) for research data in NC DOCKS / UNC Dataverse institutional repository.
  
• Assist researchers in meeting funders’ or publishers’ requirements for research data sharing by preparing and depositing research datasets in appropriate digital repositories
  
• Facilitate and contribute to further development of data repositories and support adjacent services (e.g., PID, Crossref/ DOI, ORCID )
  Outreach and coordination with campus
  
• Conduct outreach and promotion for the library and campus community on topics related to accessing, using, manipulating, and managing data
  
• Participate and work collaboratively with faculty and staff in committees, task forces, and working groups in the library and on campus, especially those involved with research data services
  Instruction and consultation
  
• Develop and deliver instructional programming and workshops on data-related topics and tools
  
• Create learning materials, documentation, and research guides in a variety of formats describing tools, guidelines, best practices, and services
  
• Deliver one-on-one consultations to faculty, researchers, and students regarding research data needs, including assistance in finding, using, and preserving research data, including review of data management plans and development of grant proposals
  
• Partner with liaison librarians to serve the research data needs of specific disciplines and support data-intensive instruction across the campus
  
• Provide training to librarians and library staff on data related topics
  General library responsibilities
  
• Provide in-person and on-call research help during scheduled Research Help Desk shifts, providing individual research assistance in person, by phone, email, and chat
  
• Support the mission and strategic plan of Randall Library and as such engage and participate in library-wide meetings, committees, and decision-making
  
• As a faculty member, participate in university and professional activities, including research, conference presentations, publications, service, and other evidence of scholarly activity
  
• Keep current with developments in librarianship, particularly in areas related to research data services
  
• Understand and promote Randall Library’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

• Master’s degree from an ALA -accredited program, or other relevant advanced degree and relevant experience
  
• Experience in an academic or research library
  
• Demonstrated knowledge of data management practices, data curation practices, and preservation principles and practices

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

• Demonstrated understanding of the research processes used in a range of disciplines, with particular focus on the research lifecycle of data
  
• Experience or demonstrated potential supporting researchers with data services, including review of data management plans, data discovery, and data storage
  
• Familiarity with funders’ or publishers’ requirements for research data management and sharing
  
• Working knowledge of open data sources for the discovery of datasets suitable for research or coursework
  
• Demonstrated experience with research data curation best practices, including retrieval, preservation, and metadata standards
  
• Background or experience indicating an ability to become proficient with data visualization and analysis tools such as D3.js, Tableau, NVivo SAS, SPSS, Python and R
  
• Experience with data management and cleanup techniques and tools (e.g., OpenRefine, DMPTool, DMPonline, Git/GitHub, Open Science Framework)
  
• Demonstrated teaching, instruction, or presentation skills for a range of audiences, including faculty and students
  
• Experience with data repository platforms, such as Dataverse or DSpace
  
• Knowledge of current issues in scholarly communication and publishing, research funding, Open Science, and discourses on reproducible research
  
• Experience with grant writing
  
• Demonstrated ability to establish strong rapport with multiple constituencies in order to effectively collaborate and build partnerships inside and outside of the library and university
  
• Demonstrated strong service orientation and skills
  
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
  
• Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  
• Demonstrated understanding of the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
