Position Summary

The clinic nurse provides direct patient care, patient education and counseling related to illness and wellness, performs telephone triage, obtains specimens for laboratory testing, administers immunizations and other injections, maintains clinic supply inventory, completes patient assistance program requirements for medications, coordinates referrals to specialists, and supervises student workers. Responsible for maintaining clinic statistics and corresponding with community partners and providers for the current COVID -19 pandemic and other disease states as needed. This is a “designated safety-sensitive position” and will be required to undergo drug testing.

Essential Job Functions of Position

• Some or all of the essential functions may be performed by the full time and/or the part time positions dependent on clinic and patient needs.

• Works closely with patients throughout the intake process to help nurse practitioners develop treatment plans and strategies. Asks patients questions about current symptoms, medical histories, and medications to provide nurse practitioners with information regarding a patient’s medical needs and background. In some cases, clinic nurse will also conduct preliminary tests such as blood pressure and respiratory checks.

• Contacting and tracking patients during the COVID -19 pandemic to provide education and guidance as needed and keep statistics for Student Health Services. Contact-Tracing training will be provided through John Hopkins University.

• Provides direct support and assistance for the facility’s nurse practitioners. May prepare equipment or other instruments to assist with procedures during a patient’s clinic visit. This aspect of the role requires a clinic nurse to rapidly shift between tasks and duties depending on where nurse practitioners need the most assistance.

• Provides direct care to patients such as: administering medication/treatments, change the dressing on wounds, or apply topical treatments, or administer medication via intravenous methods or direct injection.

• Follows up with patients to determine whether courses of treatment are effective and assess patients during follow-up appointments. Notes changes in patient’s overall health, progression, and reactions to treatment and updates patient records.

• Clinic nurses contribute to successful long- and short-term treatment through careful observation of patients on initial and follow-up visits. They may take note of changes in a patient’s overall health, progression, and reactions to treatment, updating patient records to reflect new information. Clinic nurses also report any problems or potential issues that they observe directly to nurse practitioners.

• Ensures facilities and equipment are clean and sanitized to prevent the spread of disease by sanitizing and maintaining equipment.

• Follows proper disposal procedures for potentially hazardous materials including needles and tubing and clean equipment that is used by multiple patients within the facility.

• In addition to daily interaction with patients, will often liaise between patients, nurse practitioners, and patient representatives.

• Interacts with patients throughout the day and often liaise between patients, nurse practitioners, and patient representatives like family members. Clinic nurses need to adhere to privacy laws including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ( HIPAA ) to maintain patient confidentiality, and they often need to provide family members and other care providers with information about patient health and well-being.

Non-Essential Job Functions of Position

• Rooming patients and taking vital signs. Inventory of clinic room and extra supplies.

• Restocking clinic rooms and setting up for procedures.

Education and Experience

Required: Completion of practical nursing Accreditation Commission for Nursing Education ( ACNE ) accredited program.

Preferred: 1 – 2 years of experience in an outpatient clinic setting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to use tools commonly used in a health clinic such as a glucometer, autoclave, Attest incubator, centrifuge, and AED .
• Ability to create and manage documents in Excel and Word. Working knowledge of e-mail and social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Willing to learn new programs and applications used at the university.
• Develop and maintain professional communication and relationships with community and state organizations. Effective communication skills.

Licenses, Certifications & Registrations

Required: For the part-time LPN : Kansas Licensed Practical Nurse license, current BLS for a healthcare worker.

Additional Requirements (e.g. Physical Demands)

Ability to lift and/or maneuver 40 pounds, stand for extended periods of time, and assist patients with transferring, position changes, ambulation, and mobility.
