Department Chair of Epidemiology/Biostatistics

The School of Public Health (SPH) at West Virginia University (WVU) is seeking a Chairperson to provide academic leadership of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics to provide academic leadership. This is a unique opportunity to support, shape, and enhance our population health and statistical analysis focus in teaching and applied research within a recently unified and faculty supported department that currently includes 13 full-time faculty members, 8 in Epidemiology and 5 in Biostatistics.

The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accredited School currently employs approximately 60 faculty members and nearly 300 students that are currently enrolled in its Bachelors of Science (BS) program in Health Services Management and Leadership, BS program in Public Health, Masters of Public Health (MPH) program, Masters of Science (MS) program in Biostatistics, Masters of Health Administration (MHA) program, Occupational Medicine Residency Program, Public Health/General Preventive Medicine Residency Program, PhD program in Public Health Sciences, Applied Biostatistics Certificate, and Health Data Science Certificate. The School is located at a comprehensive health sciences center (HSC) that includes, but is not limited to, collaborative relationships with the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the state’s flagship hospital, WVU Medicine, both located immediately adjacent to the School. In addition, a formal academic affiliation with the local health department exists, including a WVU Epidemiologist who is embedded in the local county health department, also located adjacent to the School/HSC.

Qualifications :

We seek applicants with a PhD or equivalent in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or a closely-related field, a successful history of competitive, externally funded research, an excellent teaching record, experience in mentoring junior faculty and graduate students, and a successful record of administrative experience and budget management. Of particular interest are candidates with demonstrated professional practice in the field(s). The Chair is expected to provide active leadership for the department's curricula and growing research portfolio, manage the department's personnel and resources, have excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, the vision and ability to raise the national and international profile of the department, and the ability to create a cross-disciplinary approach to preparing the future public health workforce.

The successful candidate will demonstrate accomplishments sufficient to qualify for hire at the rank of tenured Professor. The salary and start-up package is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department’s faculty are highly collaborative and productive with expertise across multiple public health disciplines. This includes, but is not limited to, age-related disorders, chronic diseases, injury prevention, mind-body medicine, exercise and physical activity, systems biology, travel safety, disparities in health outcomes, Bayesian computation, categorical analysis, causal inference, clinical trials, meta-analysis, nonlinear modelling, psychometrics, structural equation modeling, and the analysis of electronic medical record data. The faculty currently partner with numerous groups that include the WVU Cancer Institute, WV Clinical and Translational Science Institute, WVU Injury Control Research Center, WV Prevention Research Center, WVU School of Medicine, Stroke Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (CoBRE), Coronary Artery Risk Detection in Appalachian Communities (CARDIAC) Project, and the NIOSH.
