Position Summary

Applications are invited for the MENTOR Georgia Executive Director Position at the nationally recognized J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development, a unit of the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach at the University of Georgia.

The Executive Director of MENTOR Georgia will provide leadership to establish and launch MENTOR Georgia in accordance with the MENTOR Georgia strategic plan and MENTOR Affiliate development process.

This is a 12-month renewable, contract faculty position at the University of Georgia in the public service promotion track. The successful candidate will direct the operations of MENTOR Georgia, an Affiliate of MENTOR : The National Mentoring Partnership and a new statewide initiative at the JW Fanning Institute for Leadership Development (Fanning) that is focused on unifying and advancing the local mentoring movement while elevating and supporting existing and emerging organizations that provide mentoring services to youth.

The National Mentoring Partnership and UGA’s Fanning Institute have partnered to create MENTOR Georgia. As part of a national network of over 26 MENTOR Affiliates, MENTOR Georgia will focus its efforts on providing young people with pathways to successful adulthood by working to enhance the quality and quantity of mentoring relationships available to youth throughout the state. MENTOR Georgia aligns with Fanning’s mission to strengthen communities, organizations, and individuals through leadership development.

MENTOR Georgia will work collaboratively across sectors to drive the mentoring movement and support existing and emerging organizations that provide mentoring services to youth by expanding the capacity of organizations and systems to provide high quality mentoring programs, ensuring quality standards in all mentoring efforts, significantly increasing the number of youth in quality mentoring relationships, convening multi-sector leadership and local mentoring providers while promoting networking, collaboration, and shared learning. Likewise, MENTOR Georgia will leverage and expand the human, financial, and in-kind resources dedicated to elevating mentoring as well as expanding the number and types of organizations such as non-profits, faith communities, corporations, schools, civic groups, and universities that are equipped to support and expand mentoring initiatives. Additional Requirements

Master’s degree in leadership development, adult education, youth development, nonprofit management, organizational behavior, public administration, social work, or related field.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

Minimum of 5 years experience managing a team/organization and demonstrated ability to reach challenging objectives.

Competency in facilitation, strategic planning, business development, and organizational capacity-building.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.

Proven ability to work with a broad array of community leadership including corporate executives, interdisciplinary faculty, and the public.

Existing and well-developed professional network of people and organizations that aligns with MENTOR Georgia’s mission.

Demonstrated ability to create an inclusive culture by leveraging team members from diverse backgrounds and with diverse points of view.

Knowledge of philanthropic communities in Georgia, including Metro Atlanta. Proven fundraising experience (or clearly transferable skills) that can be leveraged to raise funds from corporations, foundations, individuals or the public sector.

Capable of self-management in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders.

Strong strategic thinking and organizational development skills.

Developing key relationships with local stakeholders including philanthropy, non-profit organizations, corporate executives and government agencies.

Percentage Of Time 40 Duties/Responsibilities

Monitoring and reporting on progress related to the organizational plan, benchmarks, and outcomes.

Providing leadership to the MENTOR Georgia Advisory Board and Mentor Program Leadership Council .

Other duties include developing and implementing fundraising, marketing, and communications plans, overseeing and managing all aspects of day to day operations, actively participating in MENTOR’s Affiliate Network and engaging in building competency related to the key core functions of a MENTOR Affiliate, and promoting research based best practices in mentoring and youth development .

As a member of the Fanning Institute faculty, the Executive Director of MENTOR Georgia must understand and embrace the land grant mission of public service and outreach at the University of Georgia, including serving the needs of underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged individuals and communities. Additionally, Fanning faculty work in diverse settings and in interdisciplinary teams, and must be skilled communicators, capable of leading and facilitating high quality meetings and group discussions. Daily and overnight travel away from Athens is required. Fanning faculty are also expected to participate in public relations, applied research, professional development, and other activities of the institute as appropriate. Supervision of graduate and undergraduate students and programmatic staff may be required .
