Job Description:
The Department of Classics at Furman University announces a one-year visiting position to begin August 2021. The teaching load is five courses over two semesters.
The department seeks a candidate who values as we do an integrated approach to teaching, collaborative learning, and scholarship. We seek a broadly-trained classicist, in any area of specialization, but candidates must have a thoughtful approach to teaching Greek and Latin, to the rigorous application of technology to humanism, and to engaging the broadest possible community in the study of the ancient world. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, and be committed to assisting the university and the department in modelling inclusive excellence. Furman's Classics Department is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of department life, and strives to create an anti-racist community through excellence in teaching, mentorship, and programming.
Applicants should submit online at https://furman.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/Furman_Careers a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation (see further below).
The deadline for application is February 28, and review of applications will begin immediately. We will conduct interviews by videoconference. Please email Randall Childree, Chair of Classics (randall.childree@furman.edu) with any questions.
Application documents (Please combine all documents into a single pdf before uploading):
1. Cover letter. (In your letter, please discuss how you would approach an upper-level Greek course and a broadly-aimed Mythology course. Also include a diversity statement that describes how your teaching, scholarship, and mentoring can contribute to our community, which includes a commitment to diversity as one of its core values.)
2. Curriculum vitae.
3. Three confidential letters of recommendation, to be submitted via Interfolio to the departmental assistant, Janice Rowe (janice.rowe@furman.edu).
