Job Summary:
The Assistant Director for the Shucker Center for Leadership Development will support the programmatic, strategic planning, and assessment goals of the Shucker Center for Leadership Development within in the Division of Student Life. The Assistant Director will advise the Shucker Leadership Institute and Omicron Delta Kappa student leadership programs. The Assistant Director will manage the annual Leadership Awards Banquet process. The Assistant Director will assist with the strategic development and coordination of student development initiatives centered in the use of the CliftonStrengths Finder Assessment (CSF). CSF initiatives include, but are not limited to, program design, training, facilitation, communications, and Strengths mentoring, coaching and advising. The Assistant Director will also provide additional opportunities for leadership and strengths development and training to Furman students through collaborations with other student life and academic partners. The Assistant Director for the Shucker Center for Leadership Development reports to the Director of the Shucker Center for Leadership Development.

Responsibilities:

Job functions for the Assistant Director for the Shucker Center for Leadership Development include but are not limited to the following:

Shucker Leadership Institute

Serves as the Primary Advisor for the Shucker Leadership Institute Fellows Program (SLI), which includes selection process of student candidates, teaching and leading leadership curriculum for first- and second-year students in SLI, and assessing outcomes for continual program improvement. Advises the Shucker Leadership Institute Student Leadership Team. Manages logistical coordination of Shucker Leadership Institute programming initiatives, which may include overnight travel Advises and supports student led service-learning work through the Leadership Challenge Project initiative (LCP). Train, advise, and assess student learning related to LCP work in the community to insure a mutually beneficial relationship between students and partners. Builds relationships, addresses issues, and works collaboratively with LCP site hosts. Serves as the liaison for faculty and staff Shucker LCP Track Mentors.

Omicron Delta Kappa

Serves as the Circle Coordinator for the Furman Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) in collaboration with the Faculty Advisor. Serves as the communication liaison between the ODK National Office and Furman University. Coordinates the annual selection and induction process for new Furman Circle ODK members. Advises the ODK Student Officer leadership team Serves as the fiscal officer for SLI, ODK and the Awards Banquet ensuring that all fiduciary commitments and all budgetary obligations are met. Facilitates the nomination and selection process for the ODK Leader of the Year competition.

Student Leadership Awards Banquet

Serves as the primary coordinator for the annual Student Leadership Awards Banquet process for the University. Solicits and facilitates the campus-wide awards selection process. Chairs a selection committee made up of faculty, staff, and students Manages the intake and collation of nominations in preparation for the selection process. Manages award recipient communications. Plans and executes awards banquet ceremony , which includes coordination with Academic Affairs, Athletics, Auxiliary Services, Student Life, and the Office of the President

Strengths Development Strategies

Responsible for the design and implementation of the programmatic elements of CliftonStrengths initiatives for Pathways Year 1 & 2 (advising program for first and second-year students) - in collaboration with the Office of Mentoring and Advising. Spearheads the development and implementation of a campus-wide strengths based leadership development initiative for student organization leaders in collaboration with the Student Strengths Ambassador team and the Office of Student Involvement & Inclusion Meets individually with students for the purpose of personalized Strengths coaching, mentoring, advising and development. Tracks all 1:1 Strengths advising appointments. Collaborates with campus Strengths Champions in the development of a system for identifying and tracking all student CliftonStrengths touchpoints and impact. Identifies opportunities to increase Strengths touchpoints for students in curricular and co-curricular areas. Designs and delivers customized CliftonStrengths programs and workshops for varied student groups and teams as appropriate. Assists with the strategic design of an operational plan to connect with faculty and staff within five years via a network of Strengths Champions including, Gallup certified Strengths Coaches, in-house trained faculty and staff, and Student Strengths Ambassadors. Works with the Director to develop and administer assessments and reflection measures for Strengths initiatives in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment. Maintains consistency, intentionality, and quality of all campus trainings for faculty, staff, and students to insure alignment with Gallup's educational outcomes and to control for Strengths saturation among our student population.

General Administrative

Supervises undergraduate and /or graduate student interns when appropriate. Prepares project reports, grant proposals, and other communications to facilitate the sharing of information and progress with campus and community partners. Responsible for website management for the Shucker Center. Participates in campus, community, and national meetings and/or training programs as appropriate to deepen knowledge of student leadership programming and Strengths-based initiatives in Higher Education. Serve on campus committees as assigned. Serves as a member of the Student Conduct Hearing Board Staff team Serve as a Level One-on call Crisis Responder for the Division of Student Life (24 hour on call rotation). Completes performance review process with supervisor/employees to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and University goals. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of the Shucker Center for Leadership Development and the Associate Director for Student Involvement in support of the goals and objectives of the Division of Student Life.

Relationships

Daily contact with members of own work unit, immediate supervisor, students, student interns to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information related to mutual goals.

Frequent contact with other departments to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information related to mutual goals.

Routinely handles confidential information.

Routine contact with the Furman community to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.

Responsibility for Final Decisions

Reviews work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines.

Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.

Reports To

Director of the Shucker Center for Leadership Development

Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor(s).

Education /Skill Requirements

Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling or other related field required.

One to three years of professional experience in the development and implementation of student leadership programs.

Prior experience with Student Organization advising.

Prior experience and/or in-depth exposure to the CliftonStrengths Assessment. Must be certified CliftonStrengths coach or become certified within 6 months of hire. New certification expenses covered by Furman.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Ability to think futuristically and develop multi-year strategic plans.

Knowledge of best practices and ability to infuse research with practical experience to create intentional leadership programs.

Understanding of student development and identity development theories and practical applications is essential.

Excellent organizational skills and strong communication skills.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.

Ability to interact with a diverse population and maintain a positive attitude in time of crisis.

Understanding of the importance of student learning outcomes and assessment preferred.

Ability to collaborate with a diverse set of staff, faculty, and students.

Grant writing skills preferred.
