Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of U.S. History to 1900 with a focus on African-American history and the African Diaspora

The History Department at Washington & Jefferson College invites applications for a tenure track assistant professorship with a specialization in U.S. history to 1900 with a particular focus on African-American history and the African diaspora, to begin in the Fall of 2021. We are particularly interested in applicants who are also able to offer courses in the history of Africa, the Caribbean, and/or the Atlantic World. We also welcome applications from candidates whose teaching and research use innovative methodological approaches and who have interests in public history.

The successful candidate will be a committed teacher/scholar deeply engaged in their field and committed to innovative, student-centered teaching in an undergraduate liberal arts setting. We look forward to welcoming a colleague eager to mentor a rapidly diversifying student population and to guide undergraduate research projects. Our new colleague will join a rapidly evolving, close-knit department of dynamic scholars and will play a significant role in re-envisioning our history program and the College's curriculum and community. More information about the Department of History can be found here: https://www.washjeff.edu/programs/history/

The teaching load is three courses each semester and will include survey courses in pre-1900

U.S. history and upper-level seminars in the field of specialization. Faculty will also teach, on a rotating basis, either the Department's new methodology course, "Thinking Historically," or our new Senior Seminar. As well, members of the department regularly contribute courses to the First Year Seminar Program and to a range of interdisciplinary programs including American Studies, African-American Studies, and Gender & Women's Studies.

A Ph.D. in History or a closely related field is required prior to beginning employment. A complete application consists of a letter of interest that describes the candidate's research interests, teaching experience and philosophy, and their vision or experience working with a diverse student population and creating equitable and inclusive learning communities; a curriculum vitae; and three letters of recommendation.
