The Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles, comprising four
constituent Departments: Department of Applied Biology and Chemical
Technology, Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of
Applied Physics, and Institute of Textiles and Clothing, is the
home for 120 academic staff members at Assistant Professor and
above levels. The Faculty offers a vibrant and dynamic
teaching and learning environment, with emphasis on not only
knowledge and technological know-how in specialist areas, but also
on generic attributes such as independent thinking, analytical
mindset and ethical perspective. The Faculty’s world-class
research programmes are supported by well-equipped laboratories and
research grants from a variety of sources. The Faculty’s

The University is now inviting applications and nominations for the
post of Dean of Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles. The
successful candidate should be qualified for appointment as Chair
Professor normally on regular terms in one of the four constituent
Departments of the Faculty, and will hold the Deanship on a
concurrent basis. The Deanship appointment is normally for an
aggregate period of six years in two three-year terms of
office. Other suitable applicant(s) for the position, if
deemed appropriate by the University, may be appointed as Chair
Professor.
Job Functions
The position calls for a visionary leader and distinguished scholar
with responsibilities of ensuring the successful operations and
sustainable development of the Faculty and its constituent
Departments for world-class educational, research and knowledge
transfer pursuits. Reporting directly to the Deputy President
and Provost, the appointee will be expected to assume the following
responsibilities:
(a) serve as an effective leader in the
development and implementation of long-term strategies and plans of
the Faculty in alignment with the University’s Vision, Mission and
Strategic Plan;
(b) inspire and ensure high-quality teaching,
support the all-round development of students, promote and support
interdisciplinary initiatives in education, and align the Faculty’s
programmes to the needs of the community;
(c) provide leadership to enable high impact
research in selected focus areas to achieve world-leading
excellence and address major societal challenges; promote and
support interdisciplinary initiatives in research and knowledge
transfer;
(d) foster strong local and international network
of partnerships with leading institutions and the community for
strategic collaborations; and stimulate a culture of innovation and
entrepreneurship to support various activities;
(e) represent the University in high-level
community/public service, and organize community service activities
of significant value with the involvement of staff, students,
alumni and friends of the Faculty;
(f) actively cultivate and strengthen alumni
network, and implement an effective mechanism to acquire
donations/sponsorship to support the University’s pursuits and
long-term development;
(g) ensure effective communication that leads to
transparent decision-making and promote the Faculty’s education and
other services to target customers, community leaders and relevant
stakeholders;
(h) ensure optimal deployment of human, financial
and other resources in the Faculty;
(i) proactively implement measures in
anticipating and mitigating risks to protect the University’s
reputation; and take ownership and leadership in managing and
resolving crisis; and
(j) undertake other responsibilities as may be
assigned by the Deputy President and Provost or the President or
his designate from time to time.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
(a) outstanding academic qualifications at Chair
Professor level in related disciplines with evidence of eminent
scholarship;
(b) a distinguished reputation as a world-leading
researcher, and a strong track record of performance in teaching,
professional services and successful leadership and management at a
senior level;
(c) the ability to promote collaboration across
Faculties and Departments so as to build a forward-looking
community in support of the future development of the
University;
(d) effective communication, interpersonal and
resources management skills and excellent capacity to embrace
challenges and drive constructive changes; and
(e) substantial knowledge of the higher education
environment in the local, regional and/or global contexts.
Experience in fund-raising will be an additional advantage.
