Assistant Professor - Dramaturgy

The Helmerich School of Drama at the University of Oklahoma invites applications for an Assistant Professor specializing in Dramaturgy. This is a tenure-track full-time position, opened as a result of a faculty retirement. Required qualifications include an MA, MFA or PhD in Dramaturgy or a related field, professional dramaturgy experience as either a staff member of a theatre or as dramaturg of professional productions, in addition to teaching experience.

Preferred qualifications include experience teaching Dramaturgy or an allied field in a BFA or MFA program. Playwriting, directing or producing experience at the professional or university level is also preferred. The successful candidate will head a Dramaturgy emphasis within a BFA conservatory-style drama program. They will teach courses in dramaturgy and playwriting. Courses in related areas of expertise are also welcome. The successful candidate will mentor approximately 20 BFA dramaturgy students and produce an annual student playwriting festival.

The OU Helmerich School of Drama prepares students for creative and meaningful professional careers in a broad range of jobs in professional theatre, dance, opera, TV, film, live entertainment, industrial and theme park venues. We offer theatre training in a conservatory-style environment while still offering the advantages of a liberal arts education from a nationally renowned university. The School is comprised of 26 full-time faculty & staff with 152 majors. It offers a BFA in Drama with emphases in design (scenic, lighting, costume, and sound), performance, stage management, and dramaturgy as well as an MA in Drama. The School collaborates with the Schools of Dance and Musical Theatre, and the opera program in The School of Music to produce 9 main stage productions each year in addition to a season of 3-4 Lab Theatre productions.
