This is a Solicitation of Interest to create a pool of qualified candidates to fill an excepted service position (Title 10) of Communication Instructor at the Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS), Marine Corps University. The Expeditionary Warfare School is located on Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia, located 35 miles south of Washington, DC. 

 

The purpose of this Title 10, Communication Instructor position is to provide EWS students with written and oral communication skills instruction. Topics include, but are not limited to, fundamentals of grammar, organization, research, formats, mechanics, oral presentation skills, and strategy. Formal instruction may also be supplemented to include technology-based tutorials and homework exercises to enhance understanding and retention.

 

The Communication Instructor will also participate in the EWS Course Content Review Board and make refinements to the curriculum in preparation for the next academic year, track students' progress over the academic year, and support the activities of MCU.

DUTIES

 

  • Developing and providing instruction in both written and oral professional communication skills to students attending EWS.
  • Testing, tutoring, and evaluating students in written and oral communication skills, ensuring all students’ written assignments effectively communicate thoughts and ideas in a logical manner, articulate a thesis, and demonstrate proficiency in English language mechanics.
  • Assisting International Military Officers (IMO) to improve oral and written English language skills by providing feedback on oral presentations and written work.
  • Assisting students and faculty in review of papers, articles, books, and case studies for publication in professional journals and scholarly presses and for use within MCU.
  • Assisting with professional communication curriculum revision and development.

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

Rating criteria will include experience, education, and training. Required knowledge and abilities include: A minimum of a Master’s degree in English, Literature, Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition, Communication, or a related field, from an accredited college or university. Knowledge of adult learning theory, methods, strategies, and best practices, as well as expertise in communication skills, English, writing, or a similar field is necessary. A background in one-on-one coaching or tutoring of students is also desirable. A clear understanding of the Chicago Manual of Style is expected for this position.

 

This opening will be filled under Title 10 Excepted Service, Instructor or Assistant Professor, AD-01 or AD-03, salary range: $58,068 - $94,783, which includes a locality payment. Pay and title will be set commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and MCU pay setting.

The candidate’s background, experience, and training will be evaluated by a selection committee against the criteria listed above. Selected candidates will be interviewed and finalists will have the opportunity to lead an evaluated seminar with EWS students.
