Research Technologist

General Summary/Purpose

The Suez lab for microbiome research is looking to hire a full-time research technologist, starting January-April 2021. The successful candidate will help set up and contribute to multiple projects in the lab related to microbial ecology and host-microbiome interactions in metabolic, infectious, and autoimmune diseases.

The individual will receive training in the relevant lab protocols, and will be responsible for performing animal experiments, in-vitro microbiological assays, and preparation of biological samples for metabolomics and RNA or DNA sequencing. As part of a new lab, the individual will participate in validating laboratory protocols as well as prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Mouse work: prepare specialized diets, feed, and monitor chow and liquid intake, monitor the wellbeing of animals and weights, perform experiments according to defined protocols, collect biological samples, genotyping.
  • Microbiology: aseptically prepare culture media, perform experiments in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, including with BL2 pathogens.
  • Molecular biology: prepare biological samples for metabolomics, and RNA / DNA sequencing, including nucleic acid purification and quantification, PCR amplification and purification, and sequencing libraries preparation.
  • Perform, document and analyze experiments in a rigorous and ethical manner.
  • Validate and optimize lab protocols.
  • Organize laboratory working areas and supplies.
  • Order laboratory supplies.
  • Routine maintenance of equipment

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Prior research experience with rodents, and/or DNA sequencing preferred but not mandatory.
  • We are looking for candidates who work well with others and are enthusiastic to learn.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
