General Summary/Purpose:

In this molecular HIV-1 laboratory the candidate will utilize their solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and experience with molecular biology and cell culture. Capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and interpreting results. Works effectively as a team-member and exhibits excellent interpersonal, time management and organizational skills. Will provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis. Ability to work in an motivated way on independent research projects and participate in the writing of manuscripts.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

    Handling and injection of mice with HIV-1. Isolation of peripheral blood lymphocytes and monocytes from human blood. Perform in vitro infection studies with HIV-1. Culture of primary cells and cell lines, performs transfection of eukaryotic cells, and transduction of cells with recombinant viral vectors. Performs general molecular biology techniques such at cloning, qPCR, and Western blotting. Performs specialized histology techniques and use of confocal microscopes and characterize cell populations using flow cytometry and data analyses of data generated with these tools. Monitors inventory levels and proper storage and use of all materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • BS/BA, or equivalent, in the biological sciences or related field required.
  • Must be willing to work under Biohazard Level 2 Safety conditions with HIV-1.
  • Must display willingness to learn and implement new technologies, have high integrity and self-motivation.
  • Expect occasional irregular work hours consistent with research needs ( eg.in vivostudies).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one-year undergraduate experience in a laboratory performing relevant techniques preferred.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
