The Department of Transmedia within the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor position in Film, beginning Fall 2021. This position comes with a 3-year contract, which is renewable based on performance and University need. We are seeking a filmmaker to join our well-established and respected film program offering both BFA and MFA degrees in Film. Our film program promotes an independent and artistic filmmaker ethos. We are therefore looking for someone who is fully informed about all aspects of film production. For this position we are seeking filmmakers working in any area or mode of filmmaking, making interesting and thought-provoking work, with a strong exhibition history. Experience teaching fiction filmmaking and/or sound is preferred.
This faculty member will bring production expertise and help design new courses based on their own research and practice, as well as teaching courses based on our programmatic and curricular needs. We look forward to our new faculty member sharing their unique vision with the program and department. For service, the faculty member will participate in committees in the department, college, and/or university and help with student advising, student learning outcomes and assessment, student recruitment, and community engagement.

Qualifications

MFA in Film preferred, or BFA with recent professional experience at the very highest level.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge of multiple modes of film production.
• Thorough understanding of both independent and mainstream film production and post-production.
• We seek a filmmaker immersed in producing their own work and with in-depth technical skills, aesthetic, and all-around production knowledge. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent teaching skills, and technical proficiency. A solid record of achievement in film festivals or other distribution channels is expected. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have the communication abilities and cross-cultural competencies to maximize their effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members.

Responsibilities

Successful candidate will fully participate in the life of the department and program and contribute to our educational mission. Assistant teaching professors serve on committees in the Department, College, and University. This may include curriculum development, community outreach, student advising, student recruitment, mentoring of student organizations, and participating in accreditation-related activities.
