Summary Description:

Under general supervision from higher level supervisory and/or maintenance staff, performs a variety of custodial and routine maintenance duties related to the care, cleaning and repair of assigned buildings, facilities and equipment; operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools and equipment; and performs a variety of general tasks relative to assigned area.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Utility Custodian classification is responsible for performing a variety of custodial and routine building maintenance duties. The Utility Custodian is distinguished from positions in the Custodian class in that incumbents in the latter class are only responsible for custodial duties associated with the cleaning of assigned buildings and facilities.

Representative Duties:

The duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of
the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties
from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business

Knowledge of:

Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work and general building and facility maintenance and repair. Pertinent building and construction codes and regulations. Basic operations and maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Safe work practices. Methods and techniques of cleaning and preserving floors, furniture, walls and fixtures. Operational characteristics of cleaning equipment and materials. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Ability to:

Perform the full range of custodial tasks and basic building and facility maintenance and repair. Operate and use a variety of custodial equipment, supplies and materials in a safe and effective manner. Operate and maintain a variety of power and hand tools. Perform minor maintenance repairs on assigned equipment. Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment. Work flexible hours. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience:

Two years of custodial work experience that includes performing building maintenance functions.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors and gases; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces. Occasional exposure to risks controlled by safety precautions. Positions may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.

Physical Demands:

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to perform moderately strenuous manual labor; to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; operate assigned equipment; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Install and perform minor repairs on office, classroom and restroom facilities including pencil sharpeners, paper dispensers and soap dispensers; assist other maintenance staff in performing minor repairs as required.

Sweep, vacuum, mop, wax, strip, and polish floors in restrooms, classrooms, laboratories and corridors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.

Dust and polish furniture, woodwork, fixtures, and equipment; remove cob webs; clean desks and counter tops; clean chalk boards and white boards; replenish chalk; clean erasers.
