The Department of Dance in the College of the Arts at California State University, Long Beach invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Dance with expertise in and an authentic and embodied knowledge of hip hop forms, who is able to teach the form in its socio-cultural and historic context with attention to its lineage as an African diasporic form.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Demonstrated professional performance and/or choreographic experience in hip hop.
• Evidence of successful teaching in forms of hip hop.
• Qualification(s) to teach additional studio and/or theory courses that draw upon the candidate's areas of artistic and/or scholarly research.
• Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• M.A., M.F.A., or Ph.D. in Dance or a related field at time of application.
• Demonstrated college teaching experience.
• Demonstrated ability to teach and/or mentor graduate/undergraduate students in two or more forms of hip hop, including but not limited to b-boy/girling, popping, house, voguing, J-setting, krumping, whacking, jookin', turfing, or commercial.
• Ability to contribute to additional areas of the curriculum such as composition/dancemaking and/or improvisation, other movement forms, dance studies (ethnography, history, theory), pedagogy, somatics, and/or dance production.
• Ability to advise and mentor the aesthetic and scholarly development of dance students in their creative and academic work.
• Demonstrated evidence of a body of choreographic work in practices such as street, community, concert, site-specific, multi genre, or interdisciplinary work.

DUTIES:

• Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in hip hop and other areas of praxis/theory/production according to expertise. Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.
• May be assigned to teach other department courses appropriate to training and expertise, including general education courses.
• Assist with development of curriculum in area(s) of expertise;
• Serve as Program Coordinator for the Hip Hop track and advise/mentor part-time hip hop faculty.
• Choreograph for department concerts. Direct department concerts and/or events.
• Participate in student recruitment and mentor graduate candidates and undergraduate dance majors or minors, including engaging in thesis supervision and providing guidance to students interested in further study or career opportunities in hip hop performance/choreography and/or pedagogy.
• Responsible for producing creative/scholarly work commensurate with the requirements for tenure and expected to contribute to the development and vitality of the department, college, and university, through service and continued engagement in the field.
• Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community.

Our department takes a holistic, student-centered approach to education that integrates dance-making and physical training with coursework in dance history and ethnography, dance science, somatics, pedagogy, design and production, and an array of immersive and challenging creative and research opportunities. Through these experiences, our faculty seeks to equip each of our graduates with the skills, knowledge and confidence to engage in the dynamic field of dance, and its related studies, and to contribute to its vitality as artists, scholars, educators and advocates. The Department of Dance offers the following degree pathways: Minor, MA, MFA, and three newly revised undergraduate programs—BA, BA Option in Dance Science, and BFA. Recent revisions to the undergraduate curriculum begin to dismantle the hierarchy of Western dance forms and acknowledge the artistic and cultural contributions and relevance of African diaspora dance to our communities and the profession. One significant change is the elevation of hip hop to an area of concentration within the BA.

The department is housed in the 90,000 square-foot Dance Center and features seven expansive and light-filled studios, an instructional classroom, a state-of-the-art dance clinic, a Pilates training facility, a computer/media lab, a large costume design and construction shop, a sound production studio, and the 230-seat Martha B. Knoebel Dance Theater. The department presents five fully produced concerts annually, featuring choreography by faculty, guest artists, MFA candidates, and dance majors. Other performance opportunities include collaborative and community-based projects and annual participation in the American College Dance Association (ACDA) regional conference.
