About the Opportunity:
The Laboratory Technician (lab tech) will assist the project manager in maintaining the daily operation of the research lab or group, with particular focus on animal husbandry. The Laboratory Technician has oversight for animal care, including husbandry, feeding and embryo preparation. Focus is on zebrafish, with secondary backup responsibilities for frog (Xenopus) care. Responsible for keeping animal systems running effectively, for maintaining water chemistry, and cleanliness. Excellent record-keeping essential, and compliance with animal care protocols. As needed, repairs or contracts with aquatic company to maintain systems.

Responsibilities:
The lab tech will be responsible for training new lab personnel in animal methods. Will supervise work study or other persons to assist with fish feeding. Will assist with collaborations from other groups wanting to use zebrafish.

Beyond animal duties, this position will contribute to running the lab, including reagent and solution preparation.

This position will forecasts materials and supply needs for the lab, orders basic lab supplies, and assists the Purchasing department with servicing and maintaining major lab equipment. Interacts with vendors to investigate novel supplies and technology.

In consultation with the Principal Investigator or other project manager, they may contribute to aspects of experiments that support the overall goals of the research group. May manage a database to compile and present results in a meaningful manner.

Collaborates with PI or project manager to analyze results and to address complex technical problems. Consults scientific literature as needed.

This position will assist in implementing changes in protocols or methods and train lab personnel or collaborators on methodologies.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biology and 2-3 years of experience in a research laboratory.

Experience working with zebrafish (or other fish or Xenopus) essential. Experience working with recirculating animal systems, in animal husbandry. Experience in setting up matings towards embryo preparation is helpful.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills required.

Able to lift 30lb as needed.

Available for short periods of time over weekends to maintain lab.


Preferred Qualifications:

Some supervisory/management experience preferred.

Knowledge of various scientific databases and some experience with publishing or presenting experimental results desirable.
