Department Marketing Statement  

The Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching in the College of Education and Human Development at The University of Texas at San Antonio invites applications for a tenure-track position in special education at the Assistant/Associate Professor level beginning Fall 2021. The successful candidate must have the ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population, and be committed to assisting the University's commitment to thrive as a Hispanic Serving Institution. As an emerging Research 1 (R1): Doctoral University and Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), applicants with a strong interest in conducting research and whose perspectives have been shaped by ethnically, culturally, and/or socially-economically diverse experiences will be prioritized for this position.


Responsibilities: Include teaching day,evening, and online classes at the Main and Downtown UTSA Campuses in academic programs leading to bachelor's degrees in interdisciplinary studies, master's degrees in education, doctoral degrees in Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, and in professional licensure programs for teachers; primary responsibility for the supervision of students in field-based practica; conducting and publishing scholarly research; advising students and supervising master's thesis; advising doctoral students and supervising dissertations, developing grant applications and proposals for the external support of research and teacher preparation in special education; and providing service to the department, college, university, community, and profession.

(1) a letter of application addressing the above required (and any preferred) qualifications;

(2) copies of official or unofficial transcripts from terminal degree institution;

(4) a 1-2 page research and teaching statement which includes discussion on the role diversity and inclusion plays in an academic environment;

(5) 1-3 recently published or submitted peer-reviewed articles;

Required Qualifications  

Required Qualifications: Include (1) earned doctorate in special education, or closely related field, must be completed by August 15, 2021. ABD applications will be considered, but doctorate must be completed by 8/15/21; (2) evidence of research agenda, with a focus on low-incidence disabilities (e.g., intellectual disabilities, autism, deaf-blindness, multiple disabilities); (3) minimum of two years professional experience teaching students with disabilities in a EC-12 classroom; (4) professional interest or experience with, and knowledge of, students from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds; (5) demonstrated ability and desire to work collegially with faculty from diverse cultural backgrounds; and (6) the ability to work with, and be sensitive to, the educational needs of students from a diverse urban population.

Preferred Qualifications  

Preferred Qualifications: Include one or more of the following: (1) expertise in Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, evidence-based practices, inclusive education, or transition to post-secondary environments; (2) publishing in refereed professional journals; (3) university teaching experience; and (4) teaching certification in special education.
