Chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology
Kennesaw State University is now accepting applications for a twelve-month, tenured faculty member meeting the requirements of full professor to serve as Chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology beginning July 1, 2021. The College of Science and Mathematics seeks a visionary and effective leader to serve as chair of the Department.
The ideal candidate will have a distinguished record in a field that interfaces with the Department's research programs, and a strong history of extramural funding. The candidate should be responsive to, and advocate for the interests of a growing department comprised of a dedicated and diverse faculty serving a vibrant student body. They will demonstrate commitment to shared governance, collaborative decision-making, and the values of inquiry, fairness, and collegiality. Compelling applicants will be committed to incorporation of inclusive excellence principles in teaching, research, and administrative operations in the department.
Primary responsibilities of the Chair, who reports to the Dean, include, but are not limited to:
- Promoting a work environment that is respectful, fair, caring, and inclusive for all faculty and staff;
- Maintaining an extramurally funded research program in molecular, or cellular, or developmental, or microbial biology or a similar field;
- Recruitment of faculty and staff;
- Managing and developing faculty and staff;
- Managing department budget and resources;
- Supporting a transparent shared governance environment;
- Providing oversight of academic programs and developing new ones;
- Advocating for the department with respect to the mission and expectations of the department, college and university;
- Implementing a plan for the departmental role in strengthening KSU as an R2 research institution.
An earned doctoral degree, or its foreign equivalent, in an area of molecular, or cellular, or developmental, or microbial biology or a similar field is required.
Preferred qualifications include:
- A strong record of successful leadership, including faculty and student mentoring, program and curriculum innovation, and the cultivation and promotion of a shared vision among colleagues;
- Administrative experience, including budgeting, in a department, college, or university setting;
- An understanding/record of promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity;
- Record of excellence in teaching, reflective of current and best practices;
- Experience working with colleagues in multiple specialties or disciplines;
- Excellence in scholarly and creative activity;
- A record of professional service and community engagement at department, college, university, discipline, and/or community levels;
- Interest in teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
