General Summary/Purpose

The Community Outreach Program Advisor will support the Special Advisor to the Vice President for Local Government and Community Affairs on broad institution wide initiatives implemented by Johns Hopkins University and Medicine leadership e.g. PTECH, EBDI, HopkinsLocal. The position requires close collaboration with staff/faculty and community based organizations (CBOs) to accomplish institution goals and objectives.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

The Community Outreach Program Advisor is responsible for preparing materials and briefing the Special Advisor on a wide spectrum of topics relevant to current issues and areas of interest to Johns Hopkins University and Medicine leadership. They must have experience and demonstrated ability in conveying complex issues to broad audiences and developing persuasive arguments to achieve desired outcomes. They will also assist the Special Advisor and the Local Government & Community team in developing and implementing goals, priorities and strategies to help the office fulfil its mission.

They must have a demonstrated record of success to establish effective, collaborative relationships with all levels of constituents throughout a broad range of interest groups, manage sensitive and confidential information and to realize objectives in a decentralized environment.

They may create and/or deliver presentations and materials to convey institution positions and activities to leadership, staff and members of internal and external constituencies.

The Community Outreach Program Advisor will attend and represent Johns Hopkins at meetings and events in the community, which requires use of personal vehicle and awareness of personal safety techniques. Some required activities (meetings/events) will occur in locations that are not ADA accessible. This position requires on-site attendance that will include some early mornings and/or late night hours.

This description is a general statement of required major duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis. It does not exclude other duties as assigned such as complex scheduling as needed for the team, and providing assistance with creating and maintaining a data management system for the office.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Three years related work experience required.

Additional education can be substituted for experience or additional experience may be substituted for education requirement to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency:

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Strong organizational skills with an ability to prioritize multiple projects, perform complex tasks and meet all deadlines.

High Level Skills in: Relationship Building, Writing, Organization, Time Management, Presentation, Problem Solving, Verbal Communication, and all Microsoft software applications.

Good stress-coping skills.

Ability to work independently and with others, and be incredibly organized.

Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Ability to create, compose and edit written materials.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, Up to 37.5 hrs/ week

Evenings and weekends will be required as necessary

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
