The Department of Pediatrics, is seeking a pediatric cardiology outpatientNurse Practitionerto be a part of the care team to improve continuity of care for general cardiology patients, expand accessibility to accommodate urgent evaluation, establish subspecialty clinics and allow participation in national collaborative requiring data registry. This NP would be well suited to assist with care of complex congenital heart disease patients in a subspecialty clinic appointment.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Outpatient NP:

The primary role for the outpatient NP would be to streamline outpatient care to patients and families, enhance communication between families and providers, and improve continuity for returning patients.

  • First line follow-up and triage of outpatient patient calls
  • Follow up of imaging tests and labs ordered on returning outpatients
  • Coordination of care with outpatient cardiologists
  • Single ventricle management
  • Maintenance of outpatient monitoring data and review with cardiologist
  • Quality improvement and data entry for institutional or national databases
  • Coordination with other outpatient services/multidisciplinary services – neurodevelopmental follow up, home nursing, PT/OT etc.
  • Staffing for single ventricle clinic in the future
  • Share/lead development of clinic guidelines
  • Intensive follow-up is necessary during the high mortality “interstage” period (daily weight, frequent oxygen saturation evaluation, management of multiple medications), as well as to help coordinate complex and multidisciplinary care, establish program norms and standards for care of single ventricle patients in our program.
  • Assistance with a single ventricle clinic, in which This NP would also answer any medication questions interfacing with pharmacy.

Care coordination with Inpatient NP:

This position, the critical interface between inpatient and outpatient care, would work closely with the inpatient NPs to ensure inpatient plan of care was clearly communicated and implemented postoperatively, or after initial hospital discharge. This would include:

  • Discharge discussion with pediatrician
  • Following up any outstanding labs/tests from hospitalization
  • Pre-visit interaction with the family and home health nursing
  • Scheduling initial postoperative cardiac appointments
  • Ordering and follow-up of imaging tests and labs, wound care, durable medical equipment, home OT/PT and other ancillary services
  • Ensuring correct cardiac medication prescription and obtaining pre-authorization for medication, as well as reinforcement of postoperative teaching begun in the hospital by NP Pat Kane.
  • Address feeding questions/interface with cardiac nutritionist
  • Assist with NPCQI data entry
Work Schedule:

  • Four (4) 10 hr shifts per week – 7am-5pm

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner – Acute Care. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Additional experience may substitute for master's degree. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification, NP certification body (PNCB) during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.

Preferred Qualifications: Three to five years Pediatric NP experience preferred. Will consider new PNP with previous bedside cardiac care experience. Pediatric critical care experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
