Rice University seeks a collaborative, inspiring, and direction-setting leader to serve as the next Dean of the Shepherd School of Music (Shepherd). The successful candidate will bring a deep understanding of artistic excellence and academic distinction, proven administrative skills, and a strong record of community engagement and philanthropic success, and will build on the School’s many existing strengths while capitalizing on future opportunities for growth.
Recognized as one of the nation’s top music programs, Shepherd enrolls approximately 300 individuals including 100 undergraduate and 200 graduate students. Shepherd students have access to both highly-personalized training and the world-class faculty, courses, and resources of one of the nation’s top research universities. Shepherd is organized into 11 academic Departments and includes 10 Ensembles, providing a conservatory experience for its students. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is the chief educational and executive officer of the Shepherd School and a member of the University’s Deans’ Council, a leadership team that works collectively to shape the future direction of Rice and define its culture for the foreseeable future.

Shepherd seeks a Dean who will provide the imagination and inspiring leadership required to continue fostering the musical, intellectual, and creative development of its young artists, faculty, and staff, while enhancing the School’s capacity to prepare its graduates for successful futures. It is expected that the Dean will work closely with faculty, staff, and university administrators to articulate priorities, opportunities, and ambitions; provide forward-looking programmatic direction; and implement creative, collaborative and innovative strategies to further strengthen the reputation and reach of the Shepherd School of Music and Rice University. The Dean will have the latitude and support to enhance teaching and research, collaborate with other units on campus, and further develop a diverse, cohesive, and high-performing community. In addition, the successful candidate will have excellent academic and musical credentials, demonstrated success in managing complex organizations, a dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a strong track record of fundraising.
