The Executive Director of Hospitality is responsible for coordinating and administrating all hospitality needs for the University community. This includes, but is not limited to, Residential Dining, Catering, Concessions and Retail Operations.

The Executive Director will manage, lead and develop a highly functioning hospitality team, be responsible for managing client relationships, and ensure profitability of the department. Identify revenue enhancement opportunities such as new service venues, expanded product offerings and incorporating the latest trends in food service. The Executive Director of Hospitality will tailor services to the Syracuse community and drive continual improvement within all outlets to meet best in class benchmarks.


A Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality/Restaurant Management or related field. Minimum of five years of proven leadership expertise with a minimum of ten years of direct food service operational management experience. Higher education experience is required.

Job Specific Qualifications

Excellent written and communication skills, strong organizational and leadership skills.
Strong financial acumen.
Experience operating both high volume and high-quality food establishments. Knowledge of inventory control and purchasing.
Experience within a college and university setting.
Strong knowledge of food and catering trends with a focus on quality, production, sanitation, food cost controls, and presentation.
Experience negotiating with and managing vendors to provide services within the food service space.
Knowledge of P&L accountability and contract-managed service experience is desirable. SERV Safe® certified a plus.
Effective organizational and planning skills.
Effective leadership and supervisory skills.
Ability to work a varied schedule to meet operational needs.
Must be forward thinking, entrepreneurial and proactive.


Lead and supervise a team in the Auxiliary Services’ department of Food Services including Residential Dining, Catering, Concessions and Retail Operations. Lead the department’s efforts to ensure the fiscal success of hospitality services in accordance with University policies, goals, and objectives.

Participate in the annual budgeting process with the Auxiliary Services Director of Budget and Finance including ongoing management and analysis to ensure accuracy and achieving budgetary milestones and targets. Develop a 10-year long range plan for hospitality services including capital project planning and equipment replacements. Identify efficiencies and implement cost control strategies to improve profitability.

Ensure that the food and service offered to the students, staff, faculty, alumni, and guests is of superior quality. Review and analyze franchise contracts and food offerings to ensure quality products and services. Partner with trade organizations such as Culinary Institute of America, National Association of College and University Food Services.

Provide support and oversight of the annual NY State Health Department inspection and licensing of all Food Services operations. Direct and conduct safety, sanitation, and maintenance programs to ensure safety of all students, family, staff, faculty, guests and clients

Foster strong inter-departmental relations and integrate the hospitality services department with the campus community. Interact with various departments, committees, student organizations and alumni. Maintain excellent relationships with students, family, staff, faculty, guests, and clients, as well as other stakeholders within the community and University. Maintain positive public relations with the Syracuse University community, including the student body, faculty, administration and support staff. Hold periodic meetings with the Division of Enrollment and Student Experience, Student Government and other student groups, campus departments, and organizations regarding hospitality services. Represent Food Services during all union grievances and engage with the union on a regular basis.
