Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Center for Marine Science at UNC Wilmington is dedicated to providing an environment that fosters a multidisciplinary approach to questions in basic and applied coastal and marine research. The mission of the center is to support and promote coastal and marine science at UNCW, including research, outreach and service, and teaching. This includes a variety of fields such as oceanography, coastal and wetland studies, estuarine science, marine physiology and genetics, fisheries, aquaculture, marine biotechnology, marine policy and education, and other aspects of marine biology, marine and atmospheric chemistry, marine geology, environmental studies/sciences, and physical oceanography. The center fosters research programs of the highest quality and thereby enhances the educational experience provided by The University of North Carolina Wilmington for both undergraduate and graduate students in marine science.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
This Time-Limited Research Technician position will assist with analysis of ocean observations by satellite and in situ instrumentation. This position will assist with taking ocean observations made by others and casting them into standardized formats with appropriate metadata. This position will assist in preparing publications, including plotting scientific data, generating high quality graphics and tabulating tables of statistics. This position will be asked to document their work in writing and through preparation of oral presentations. This position may be asked to help supervise interns or students.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School and two years of directly related experience required to perform the assigned duties or equivalent combination of education and training and appropriate certifications.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Earth Science or related field preferred
Ability to code in MATLAB
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint software
Knowledge of principles of geospatial metadata
Understanding of netCDF format and ability to read and write files that comply with up-to-date specifications
Ability to read and understand data in various formats, including text, “.mat”, “.csv”, etc.
Completion of courses in differential equations, linear algebra, multivariate calculus, intro statistics, data structures, introductory calculus-based physics (mechanics, electricity & magnetism, optics, and modern physics), oceanography, and Earth surface processes
Ability to document results in written form and in oral presentations
Familiarity with the scientific publication process
Experience with supervising students or interns
