Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Department of Neurology is to provide state of the art comprehensive patient centered neurological care for adults and children, perform translational and clinical research to further understanding of disease mechanisms and develop new treatments, and train the next generation of neurologists and clinical neuroscientists. The Department of Neurology is committed to enhancing diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

We are seeking candidates for the open rank, full-time, Vascular Neurology Division Chair position in the Department of Neurology. The faculty member will provide patient care, engage in medical student and neurology resident and fellow education, and participate in clinical research.

The Division Chair of Vascular Neurology will lead the development and implementation of educational and research programs in collaboration with other neuroscience focused departments. VCUHS has a very strong clinical stroke program, but there is a significant opportunity to enhance our research portfolios. We have joined the Capital Region Regional Coordinating Center for the NIH funded StrokeNet consortium as a “spoke” site. This position will grow our clinical trial and clinical and translational programs in vascular neurology, including joining StrokeNet as an independent RCC or as a full ‘hub’ partner in the Capital Region RCC .

Position Responsibilities

Research
The Division is dedicated to expanding its research mission in partnership with other stakeholders across the University to deepen understanding of mechanisms of disease in order to discover new treatments. Division faculty lead and participate in numerous clinical trials. VCU Neurology is a spoke site in the Stroke National Capital Area Network for Research ( SCANR ) Regional Coordinating Center in the NIH funded StrokeNet consortium. Research in the Division and Stroke Center is supported by the Department’s Neurology Clinical and Translational Research Office as well as the robust resources available via the CTSA funded Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research ( CCTR ).

Education
Faculty in the Division are involved in teaching and guiding medical students, residents and fellows. Learners gain knowledge and develop skills in prevention, treatment and recovery for patients with all types of cerebrovascular disease. Certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, VCU’s one-year vascular neurology fellowship (2 positions yearly) provides comprehensive training in the inpatient and outpatient management of cerebrovascular disorders.

The Division Chair for Vascular and Critical Care Neurology will report to the Chair of the Department of Neurology and maintain an active clinical practice while leading the Division. This position will oversee budgeting, staffing, recruitment, and planning. The incumbent will maintain a close collaborative relationship with health system leadership and colleagues from many departments throughout the Health System involved in the care of patients with cerebrovascular disease. The Division Chair will lead the development and implementation of educational and research programs in collaboration with other neuroscience focused departments. The Chair will be responsible for leading growth in VCU’s clinical trial and clinical and translational portfolio in vascular and critical care neurology (including leading VCU’s participation in StrokeNet).

Required Qualifications

The Division Chair for Vascular and Critical Neurology must be a strategic thinker with strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to listen and respond to a broad range of perspectives. Additionally, they must have:

• An MD/DO, with residency training at an accredited institution

• Eligibility for licensure in Virginia and board certification or board eligible in Neurology

• Understanding of, and appreciation for, the three missions of research, education, and clinical care as it applies to Vascular and Critical Care Neurology in the context of academic medicine

• A strategic orientation that looks to collect, analyze, and act on relevant data to make thoughtful decisions for immediate action and long-term plans in clinical operations and quality initiatives

• Strong leadership ability and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage colleagues within Vascular and Critical Care Neurology, the Neurology Department, and the health system more broadly

• Sufficient experience working in a collaborative academic environment to recruit and support clinician scientists

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

• Fellowship training and board certification in Vascular Neurology care

• Research experience (basic, translational, clinical, health outcomes etc.) is desirable
