Overview
Employment Status: Full-time, At-Will, "Exempt" position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

Work Schedule: Generally, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (May required to work nights and weekends pending operational needs).

Salary: Salary commensurate with the background and experience of the individual selected.

The Office of Philanthropic Giving is part of University Advancement and is responsible for securing private philanthropy from alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations to advance the University's mission in the support of the faculty, staff, and students. OPG plays a critical role in advancing the University and cementing CSUSB's reputation as a preeminent center of intellectual and cultural activity in Inland Southern California.

Typical Activities
California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is looking for a new Senior Director of Philanthropy for our Palm Desert Campus. This is an evolving time to join the CSUSB Philanthropic Giving team as we seek seasoned and creative fundraising professional to help us define strategic and innovative ways to engage our donors, friends, and alumni in the current virtual environment and beyond.

The Senior Director of Philanthropy, Palm Desert Campus will provide fundraising leadership to the PDC Dean and campus on funding opportunities serving our students and community. As Senior Director of Philanthropy, you have the important role of helping our donors accomplish their philanthropic goals and ambitions through a deepened relationship with CSUSB, a unique, anchor university in Inland Southern California, and its Palm Desert campus serving the students and residents of the Coachella Valley.

You will design, develop, and implement a major gift program for the Palm Desert Campus, and develop and cultivate a viable pipeline of principal gift and planned giving donors. You will be responsible for managing and cultivating relationships with existing major gift donors, as well as identifying new prospects. An ability to employ active listening and clearly communicate the University's mission is key.

As Senior Director of Philanthropy, you will:

  • Serve as part of the Associate Vice President's senior leadership team to support the department's strategic and operational planning
  • Secure major gifts of $25,000 or more with the goal of raising six- to seven-figures annually (specific goals and metrics are negotiated and set annually)
  • Support systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects, and file contact reports.
  • Manage an existing portfolio of major gift donors and prospects
    • Begin developing a viable pipeline for principal and planned gifts at $500,000 and above
    • Work with campus deans and advancement colleagues to align efforts and set goals
    • Create and implement moves management plans and top donor strategies
    • Develop stewardship plans to acknowledge major donors through public and private recognition
    • Track and report progress using specific metrics
    • Provide general supervision for a Philanthropic Support Associate
    This job might be for you if:

  • You have at least eight years of nonprofit or higher education fundraising experience and have demonstrated experience securing individual major gifts and meeting objectives.

  • You establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with external constituencies.
  • You have honed your writing and speaking skills and use them to compel individuals to action.
  • People are inspired by your determination. You bring people in line with a vision and motivate them to reach goals


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education and Experience

    • Eight or more years of experience in fundraising with experience in major and principal gifts.
    • Supervisory experience.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • An advanced degree is preferred.
    • Higher education advancement experience is preferred.
    • A Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification and planned certification is preferred.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Strong writing and interpersonal skills, highly- collaborative and team-oriented.
    • Creative, strategic, and forward-thinking.

    A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
